Hogwarts Mystery Review

This is a role-playing game set in Wizarding World created by J.K. Rowling. The story of the game takes place in the years 1984-1990, and you will be able to play as a new student at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. You’ll have the opportunity to learn many useful spells, fly on a broom, brew potions, and experience everything else Hogwarts can offer.

You’ll play as a character whose older brother got expelled from Hogwarts for breaking school rules in pursuit of the mysterious cursed vaults. After he got expelled, he disappeared, and it’s up to you to solve the mystery of the cursed vaults and find out what happened to your brother.

During your Hogwarts journey, you will encounter many famous characters from the Wizarding World. You’ll be able to interact with them, get to know them, and even befriend some of them. You will make new friends and rivals, and you’ll even get to romance some of the characters. On top of that, you will also get the opportunity to play Quidditch for your house team.

But that’s not all. You will be able to learn to care for various Magical Creatures. You’ll get to spend time with them, feed them, and even unlock special adventures involving some of them. All of that will help improve your Magizoology skills, which will in turn allow you to unlock more Magical Creatures.

We rate it 4 out of 5 stars.

Game structure

The game is divided into three sections: Main Story, Side Content, and Quidditch. The Main Story is split into seven years of your Hogwarts studies. Each year is divided into chapters, and every chapter has a list of tasks and lessons you need to do in order to complete it.

The Side Content of the game consists of Side Quests and Adventures (also known as Time-Limited Side Quests). Each Side Quest and Adventure will unlock once you reach a certain chapter of the Main Story, and you will be able to access them from the Side Quest section.

Lastly, you can access Quidditch from the Quidditch section, and the Quidditch content is divided into seasons. Each of the seasons contains a number of chapters, and to access the next season, you will need to complete all of the chapters of the previous one.

We rate it 4 out of 5 stars.

The Story

The main aspect of Harry Potter Hogwarts Mystery is its story. It takes place several years before the events of the books, and it is tied in well to the source material. You’ll get to meet some of the characters from the books and interact with them and see things from a different perspective. You’ll also visit many iconic locations from the books and experience them from an entirely new perspective.

It is also worth noting that the story of the game is relatively slow-paced. During your Hogwarts years, you will slowly uncover the mysteries of the cursed vaults and learn what happened to your brother while he was searching for them. Overall, the story of the game is quite enjoyable, as long as you like the slow-burner type of stories that take years to unravel.

We rate it 4 out of 5 stars.

Gameplaywise, do not expect some fast-paced action adventure. The game is heavily focused on its narrative and most of the gameplay is divided into story tasks and lessons. Your main resource in this game is energy, and you use it to complete the said tasks and lessons. Each task requires a certain number of energy points to complete, and this resource is slowly regenerating over time.

Most of the tasks are time-limited, meaning that you need to complete them in a set amount of time. Because of that, you generally want to avoid starting any of the tasks if your energy is low, or you might risk failing to complete them.

The game also features a dueling system, and oftentimes, you will find yourself dueling various opponents, from some of your fellow students to dark witches and wizards, and even some dangerous magical creatures. Your main attributes in Hogwarts Mystery are Courage, Empathy, and Knowledge. Many dialogue choices you can make in the game require a certain level in one of these attributes. Also, each duel has attribute requirements, and the difficulty of the duel will be determined by your current attribute levels.

You can increase your attributes by attending lessons, feeding your max-level magical creatures, doing in-game events, completing side quests and adventures, and purchasing cosmetic items from the shop. All things considered, it is a relatively straightforward system, and new players won’t feel overwhelmed since the game does a great job of gradually introducing new mechanics to the player. While the gameplay may be simple, it is easy to understand, and it fits well into the narrative aspect of the game.

We rate it 4 out of 5 stars.

The Atmosphere

The atmosphere of Harry Potter Hogwarts Mystery is its strongest suit. From the get-go, you will feel like a part of the Wizarding World. The game does a great job of making the player immersed in the story and its setting, and you’ll truly feel like a Hogwarts student. Many of the things that made people fall in love with books are also present in the game and will further enrich its atmosphere.

A solid 5 out of 5 stars.
