Introduction
Hello everyone, welcome to our Walkthrough for Cold as Ice Side Quest of Harry Potter Hogwarts Mystery. This is a creature-related side quest, and it is available for students of Year 6 and above.
It should unlock after reaching Chapter 33 of Year 6, and completing it should help you improve your friendship with Hagrid.

Walkthrough
Once you start it, Hagrid will ask you to meet him in his hut, so proceed there when you are ready. Hagrid will be glad to see you, and you’ll wonder why he wanted to meet with you.
Hagrid will tell you that the weather has been a bit brisk lately, and you’ll be slightly confused to hear that, as not many would expect urgent matters to start with weather reports. Hagrid will go on to explain that he conjured a cozy fire to keep Fang warm but forgot to put it out before falling asleep. As a result, there was an Ashwinder in his hut. The following lines of dialogue will differ, based on whether or not you’ve adopted the Ashwinder.
Unfortunately, the creature slithered away before Hagrid had the chance to take it to the Magical Creatures Reserve. By the looks of it, Fang got properly spooked by the Ashwinder.
According to Hagrid, there is a chance that the creature made its way into the castle, and if his theory is correct, it could potentially spell disaster. You’ll then ask Hagrid to tell you everything he knows about Ashwinders. Learning about these magical creatures requires earning five stars within one hour. Three stars are needed to pass.
There is a bonus action tied to Hagrid. Prioritize it if you want to save a bit of energy.
You’ll thank Hagrid for telling you about Ashwinders. As it seems, these magical creatures can be incredibly dangerous, especially when they lay eggs. Interestingly enough, they only live for one hour, so they seek secluded areas to lay eggs. Afterward, they collapse into dust.
You’ll ask Hagrid about the eggs, and according to him, those can get just as hot as the dragon’s fire if left alone for too long. He’ll advise you to be extremely careful around Ashwinders. Despite the warning, you’ll be fascinated by these magical creatures, and Hagrid will wonder why you find them fascinating. There are three options to reply with. This choice won’t significantly impact the story, so feel free to go with the option you prefer.
In any case, you’ll need to find the missing creature as soon as possible. Before leaving the hut, Hagrid will tell you to befriend an Ashwinder of your own. This line will be different if you’ve already befriended one.
You will need to unlock Ashwinder before you can continue. You can find one in the Dusklands area of Magical Creatures Reserve.
To adopt the Ashwinder, you will need 55 Red, 55 Blue, and 40 Yellow Notebooks. On top of that, your Magizoology level will need to be nine or higher. While it may take a while to collect the required notebooks, this side quest is not time-limited, so you can take as long as you need to complete this task.
After adopting the Ashwinder, Hagrid will ask you to meet him in the Kitchens, so proceed there when you are ready. When you arrive, you will notice the speech bubbles above some of the characters. Tap on those if you are curious to see what they have to say. Hagrid will be glad to see you.
You’ll wonder why he wanted to meet you in the Kitchens, and apparently, someone saw an Ashwinder there. Hagrid will remind you that time is of the essence, and you’ll introduce your Ashwinder to him, hoping it will help you track down the missing creature.
Hagrid will be glad that you are forming a bond with your Ashwinder, and moments later, the creature will slither toward the fire.
Suddenly, another Ashwinder will pop out of the cauldron.
Apparently, the rumor was correct.
Hagrid will suggest taking the Ashwinder to the reserve before it lays its eggs. Before he gets to finish the sentence, the creature will crumble into dust.
Hagrid will realize that the Ashwinder already laid its eggs. Following that, he’ll ask if you remember what happens if the eggs go unattended. There are three options to choose from. The correct answer is ‘They burn’.
Hagrid will assume that the eggs are somewhere in the castle, and if his assumption is correct, you’ll need to find those eggs as soon as possible. You’ll suggest searching the Kitchens first. To complete this task, you will need to earn five stars within three hours. Three stars are needed to pass.
Be sure to slide the screen left and right to see all the available actions. There are reward actions tied to Hagrid, one of the cauldrons, and the dishes. Focus on those if you want to save some energy.
After searching the Kitchens and realizing the eggs aren’t there, you recall a trail of ash leading into the Kitchens. Figuring the Ashwinder laid its eggs elsewhere, Hagrid will suggest following the trail, but Pitts cleaning the ash trail makes it no longer an option. Hagrid will tell him that the trail of ash was important. Sadly, Pitts won’t seem to agree with him.
Shortly after, Hagrid will suggest splitting up to search for the Ashwinder eggs. He’ll direct you to seek help from Professor Kettleburn, who has a history with Ashwinders. Despite finding it odd that Kettleburn wouldn’t want to help, you’ll decide to talk to him. Meanwhile, Hagrid will plan to search the rooms around the kitchens.
Head to the Care of Magical Creatures when you are ready to continue. You’ll approach Professor Kettleburn and say that you need his help.
He’ll smile and say that he is always happy to help. Suddenly, he’ll notice your Ashwinder and his expression will change.
You’ll introduce the creature to him, noticing the worried look on Professor Kettleburn’s face.
He’ll feel uncomfortable talking about his past experience with Ashwinders, but you’ll express your urgent need for his help, especially considering the involvement of Ashwinders.
Professor Kettleburn will say that he shouldn’t be the one to help you. He’ll be afraid of history repeating itself, and you will ask him to tell you what happened. He’ll explain that many years ago, an Ashwinder nearly burned down Hogwarts, and it happened during a Christmas performance of The Fountain of Fair Fortune. If you’ve completed An Enchanted Kiss adventure, you’ll get some additional lines of dialogue.
Professor Kettleburn will admit that the whole incident was his fault. He’ll then explain what happened.
You’ll decide to convince him to help you. To do that, you will need to earn five stars within three hours. Three stars are needed to pass.
There are bonus actions tied to your character and the Ashwinder. Focus on those to save some energy.
Upon realizing the severity of the situation, Professor Kettleburn will agree to help you. However, he’ll first ask you to give him a good enough reason to get involved with Ashwinders again. There are three options to reply with. This choice won’t have any significant impact on the story, so feel free to pick the option you prefer.
In the end, you’ll successfully convince Professor Kettleburn to assist you in locating the Ashwinder eggs, and when you ask if he has any idea where the eggs might be, he’ll advise you to search in cold, dark, and isolated places.
Thinking that the eggs might be in the Slytherin Common Room, you’ll decide to go there and search for them. Professor Kettleburn will support your plan and wish you good luck before you leave.
Proceed to the Slytherin Common Room when you are ready. When you arrive, you’ll be able to interact with some of the students and see what they have to say. Barnaby will notice the Ashwinder following you, so he’ll warn you about it.
Assuring him that there’s nothing to worry about, you’ll introduce the creature to Barnaby, who will be happy to meet the Ashwinder.
You’ll mention that you’re on a quest to find the Ashwinder eggs, and Barnaby’s response will be hilariously brilliant.
Thankfully, he’ll be more than happy to help you, and you’ll explain what could happen if you don’t find those eggs soon.
He’ll recall some facts about Ashwinders.
You will then get to choose a place to search. There are three options to pick from. The correct option is ‘Behind the bookshelf’.
Once you approach the bookshelf, Barnaby will say that it feels much warmer than before. Your Ashwinder will start feeling nervous about something and go behind the bookshelf. Moments later, it will come out with several Ashwinder eggs.
The following lines will differ, based on your trust level with the Ashwinder.
In any case, you’ll need to find a way to get the eggs out of the Slytherin Common Room. Hopefully, the two of you will be able to come up with a plan to safely transport the eggs. To devise a plan, you’ll need to earn five stars within three hours. All five stars are needed to pass, so avoid starting this task if you are out of energy.
There is a reward action tied to your character. Prioritize it whenever it is available to save a bit of energy.
After considering your options, you’ll figure out that the best approach would be to somehow cool down the eggs and Barnaby will like that idea. The following lines will differ, based on whether you know the Freezing Spell or not. In any case, you’ll decide to pay a visit to Professor Flitwick and see if he can help you.
Barnaby will advise you to spend more time with your Ashwinder before visiting Professor Flitwick. You’ll need to reach level 4 trust with the Ashwinder before you can continue. Since this quest is not time-limited, there is no need to rush this task.
Once you are done, proceed to the Charms classroom to see Professor Flitwick. You’ll learn that Barnaby already explained the situation to Professor Flitwick.
The following lines will differ, based on whether or not you know the Freezing Spell.
Professor Flitwick will quickly realize you are talking about the Ashwinder eggs and recall the time when Hogwarts nearly got burned down. He’ll even blame himself for what happened.
You’ll calmly say it was an accident, and you’ll also mention that Professor Kettleburn agreed to help, surprising Flitwick. He’ll ask if you are confident your plan will work. There are two options to reply with. Both options will eventually lead to the same outcome, so feel free to pick either one.
In the end, Professor Flitwick will agree to help you. To learn about the Glacius charm, you’ll need to earn five stars within one hour. Three stars are needed to pass.
There are bonus actions tied to Professor Flitwick and the Ashwinder. Prioritize those if you are looking to save some energy.
Professor Flitwick will tell you some important things about the Glacius charm.
He’ll suggest you give it a try. Barnaby will let you cast the spell on him, and you’ll ask Professor Flitwick if it is safe to use the spell on your friend. According to him, Barnaby won’t be harmed by the Freezing Spell. You’ll take out your wand and prepare to cast the spell, tracing the wand movement on the screen to do so.
The spell will work, and Barnaby will be encased in ice.
Professor Flitwick will praise your spellcasting skills. He’ll tell you to go and freeze the eggs as soon as possible. In the meantime, he’ll thaw Barnaby. You will thank him for his help before leaving the classroom.
Head to the Slytherin Common Room when you are ready to continue. Upon arriving, you’ll notice the speech bubbles above some of the students. Tap on those if you are curious to see what they have to say. You’ll thank Professor Kettleburn for agreeing to meet you and say that you are ready to cast the Freezing Spell on the eggs.
He’ll be glad to hear that.
Barnaby will assure Professor Kettleburn that you are more than capable of casting the spell properly.
Shortly after, you will get to cast the spell and freeze the Ashwinder eggs. Trace the wand movement on the screen to cast Glacius.
The spell will work and all of the eggs will get frozen.
Professor Kettleburn will congratulate you on a job well done, and you’ll suggest gathering up the eggs. Unfortunately, the Ashwinder won’t allow Professor Kettleburn to get near the eggs.
You’ll advise him to use the opportunity to put the past behind him once and for all, and he’ll agree that it is finally time to face his fears. However, he’ll be a bit nervous about it, and you’ll offer to help him connect with the Ashwinder. To do that, you will need to earn five stars within eight hours. All five stars are needed to pass.
There is a bonus action tied to Professor Kettleburn. Prioritize it to save some energy.
Professor Kettleburn will realize that his fear was misplaced, admitting he made an honest mistake when he confused the Ashwinder for a worm. After spending some time with the creature, he’ll finally feel a connection, and it seems Ashwinder feels it too.
Professor Kettleburn will thank you for your help and suggest taking the Ashwinder eggs to the Care of Magical Creatures, an idea you readily embrace.
You will need to reach level 7 trust with the Ashwinder before you can continue. Since this side quest has no time limit, you can take as long as you need to complete this task.
Once you’re done, head to the Care of Magical Creatures to find a purpose for the eggs. As it seems, Hagrid was already informed about everything you’ve done.
You’ll humbly say you had a lot of help along the way, and then he’ll be curious to know which part of your journey has been the most satisfying. There are three options to choose from. This choice won’t significantly impact the story, so feel free to pick the option you prefer.
Hagrid will say there is still one matter yet to be resolved.
Professor Kettleburn will tell you that leaving the eggs on school property wouldn’t be the wise thing to do. You’ll say that you want to find a noble use for the eggs and suggest discussing possible uses for the Ashwinder eggs. To complete this task, you will need to earn five stars within three hours. All five stars are needed to pass, which is why it is not recommended to start this task with an empty energy bar.
There are two reward actions tied to Hagrid. Prioritize those to save energy.
Apparently, there are several uses for Ashwinder eggs, and they can be used as an ingredient in some potions.
They are also used as an antidote to ague.
After considering the options, you’ll suggest donating the eggs to St. Mungo’s Both Hagrid and Professor Kettleburn will like the idea and by the looks of it, the Ashwinder will also agree with the decision to donate the eggs to St. Mungo’s.
Hagrid will admit he never expected to see Professor Kettleburn befriending an Ashwinder.
It also helped him get over the catastrophe that happened many years ago.
He’ll thank you for everything you’ve done, and Hagrid will also express gratitude for saving the day. Professor Ketllwburn will mention the unbreakable bond you formed with your Ashwinder.
