Introduction: The Shape-Shifting Terror

Among the many aquatic creatures that haunt the lakes and rivers of the wizarding world, none inspire both fascination and dread quite like the Kelpie. A malevolent water-dwelling entity with the ability to shape-shift, the Kelpie lures unsuspecting victims onto its back before dragging them beneath the water to a watery grave.

Native to the lochs of Scotland and Ireland, these creatures are among the most cunning and dangerous magical beings known to wizardkind.

Recent reports from the Ministry of Magic indicate an unusual disturbance in Loch Eathach, where local wizards have described sightings of a ghostly horse-like figure near the shoreline.

Tales of disappearing livestock and a growing fear among nearby magical communities have prompted an urgent investigation. Our mission is to confirm the presence of a Kelpie, document its behavior, and, if necessary, contain the creature before it poses a greater threat.

Evelyn Rosethorn, Tobias Flint, and Lillian Hawthorne accompany me on this endeavor. With protective enchantments, underwater breathing charms, and a healthy dose of caution, we set out on what promises to be one of our most perilous expeditions yet.

Creature Profile: The Kelpie

Classification: XXXX (Highly dangerous, known to be lethal)
Habitat: Deep lakes, rivers, and other freshwater bodies in the British Isles
Abilities & Traits:

  • Shape-shifting Mastery – Most commonly appears as a horse but can take on other forms, including humanoid shapes.
  • Luring Mechanism – Uses enchanting appearances and hypnotic whinnies to draw in victims.
  • Immense Strength – Even in its horse form, a Kelpie possesses enough power to subdue an adult wizard effortlessly.
  • Water Manipulation – Can control water to a limited degree, often creating currents to ensnare prey.

The only known way to subdue a Kelpie is to place a bewitched bridle over its head, forcing it into submission. However, obtaining such an item is no easy task, as the creature is cunning enough to evade capture and lethal enough to eliminate those who try.

Expedition Log

Evelyn Rosethorn’s Entry:

We arrive at Loch Eathach just as twilight begins to cast its deep blue hues over the water. The surface of the loch is eerily still, broken only by the occasional ripple. The air is thick with mist, swirling in ghostly tendrils as if the very lake itself is alive.

As we set up a perimeter around the shore, I noticed a strange silence hanging over the area. The usual sounds of nocturnal creatures are absent—no owls, no rustling leaves, just an unsettling quiet that raises the hairs on the back of my neck.

Then, we hear it. A distant, mournful whinny echoes across the water. It is both beautiful and chilling, a call that seems to bypass the ears and speak directly to the soul. I feel a pull toward the sound, my body instinctively stepping forward before Tobias grips my arm.

We brace ourselves, wands at the ready.

Tobias Flint’s Entry:

The moonlight glistens off the lake’s surface as we scan for movement. A figure emerges from the mist—a stunning black horse with a flowing mane that shimmers like liquid ink. Its eyes, unnervingly intelligent, lock onto ours. It paws at the ground, a silent invitation.

Lillian mutters a detection spell, and the air around the creature shimmers with hidden magic. The illusion fractures for a moment, revealing a ghastly, waterlogged form beneath the elegance. Its eyes, once mesmerizing, now glow with an eerie hunger.

Alexander is the first to act, raising his wand. “Finite Incantatem!” he commands, attempting to disrupt the enchantment. The Kelpie rears back, letting out a piercing screech that sends ripples across the lake.

The illusion flickers violently before the creature bolts, galloping toward the water’s edge with inhuman speed. We give chase.

The Capture Attempt

Lillian Hawthorne’s Entry:

The Kelpie dives into the lake, its form shifting as it hits the water. Where once a majestic horse stood, now a sinuous, eel-like beast slithers beneath the surface, its long body undulating through the depths. We barely have time to react before it turns, its powerful tail sending a surge of water crashing onto the shore.

Alexander and I cast Bubble-Head Charms before diving in. The lake’s depths are darker than ink, but we can see the Kelpie weaving through the water like a shadow. It circles us, assessing, waiting.

A sudden force yanks at my leg, dragging me downward. My wand flashes as I cast a severing charm, barely managing to break free from the Kelpie’s grip.

Tobias fires a Stunning Spell, but the creature evades it effortlessly, its form shifting once again. It now resembles a monstrous, webbed-limbed hound, its gaping mouth lined with rows of jagged teeth.

Evelyn, still on shore, shouts an incantation and a silver chain materializes in her hands. It glows with enchantments designed to subdue magical beasts.

With precision, she hurls it forward. The chain wraps around the Kelpie’s snout, and the creature lets out a guttural, furious cry. Its shape flickers wildly between forms as if trying to break free from its own restraints.

Conclusion: A Temporary Victory

As dawn breaks, the Kelpie finally ceases its struggle. The enchanted bindings have rendered it dormant—for now. We haul it onto the shore, taking a moment to catch our breath.

Alexander examines the beast closely. “It’s younger than I expected,” he muses, brushing damp strands of mane from its eyes. “Not a full-grown Kelpie yet, which explains its reckless behavior.”

The revelation is both relieving and alarming. If a juvenile Kelpie has made its way to Loch Eathach, it raises a troubling question—where is the rest of its kind?

We secure the creature in a magically reinforced enclosure, where it will be safely transported to a Ministry containment site. As we prepare to leave, I catch one final glimpse of the lake.

The waters have returned to their undisturbed state, yet I cannot shake the feeling that we have only scratched the surface of the mysteries that lie beneath.

Final Note

The waters of the wizarding world hold secrets darker than we dare to imagine. Let us never forget that even the most alluring beauty can conceal the deadliest of dangers.

Though this expedition has concluded, our vigilance must remain. If a Kelpie was here, more may follow. And if there is one certainty in magical exploration, it is that for every question we answer, a dozen more emerge in its wake.

End of Entry.
