Introduction

Hello everyone, welcome to our Walkthrough for Needlefingers and Company Side Quest of Harry Potter Hogwarts Mystery.

This creature-related side quest is available for students of Year 2 and above, and it should unlock after you reach Chapter 2 of Year 2.

Completing this side quest should increase your friendship experience with Hagrid. During it, you’ll help Hagrid find a home for an unusual Bowtruckle.

Shortly after the quest starts, Hagrid will ask you to meet him in his hut, so proceed there when you are ready.

Your friend will have something interesting to show you. You’ll wonder what it is. He will show you quite an unusual-looking Bowtruckle.

Apparently, the creature has been hiding in a redwood box ever since Hagrid brought it to his home.

Luckily, he managed to lure it out with some food. According to Hagrid, this Bowtruckle is quite special.

You’ll wonder where he found it. You will learn that Hagrid recently stumbled upon it while he was in Hogsmeade. Interestingly enough, the creature was trying to open his trunk.

Since this will be the first time you hear about something like that, you’ll ask if other Bowtruckles are exhibiting such behavior.

Hagrid will explain that most Bowtruckles are living in wand-quality trees of their choosing. However, thanks to their long fingers, they can easily pick locks.

Because of that, thieves often capture and raise them.

You’ll notice that the Bowtruckle Hagrid brought has particularly long fingers. Your friend will smile and say that he named the creature Needlefingers.

You’ll notice that the Bowtruckle seems untrusting. According to Hagrid, it kind of makes sense since most thieves abandon these creatures once they are done with them. Thankfully, your friend is nothing like that, and he’ll find the Bowtruckle completely adorable.

He’ll be curious to hear your opinion. There are three options to choose from. While this choice won’t significantly impact the story, if you like Hagrid, it is recommended to select the first option.

You’ll learn that the Bowtruckles can start to develop antisocial habits if they live on their own for too long. And if that happens, trying to integrate one such Bowtruckle into a colony is almost impossible.

You’ll ask if it means that Needlefingers may never have a home. Thankfully, there is still time to teach it how to interact with other Bowtruckles.

Unfortunately, Hagrid already tried to show Needlefingers some nice trees near the colony on the reserve, and it didn’t really go well.

Ever since then, the creature wasn’t very friendly unless he gave it food. Hagrid will assume that Needlefingers might be untrusting of people, in general.

Luckily, you’re quite good with magical creatures, so there might be something you can do to help.

You’ll thank Hagrid for his kind words and ask how to start. He will suggest you talk to Needlefingers and see if it likes you. Hopefully, that will help the creature open up a bit. You’ll agree to give it a try.

Talking to Needlefingers requires earning five stars within one hour. Since all five stars are needed to pass, avoid starting this task if you are low on energy.

There are bonus progress actions tied to Hagrid and your character. Prioritize those actions to save a bit of energy.

Unfortunately, after a short while, Needlefingers will just go back into the box. You’ll realize that the creature doesn’t seem interested in socializing at all.

Hagrid will point out the silver lining of the whole situation.

With some patience, you might be able to figure out how to get Needlefingers to open up. You’ll suggest introducing it to another Bowtruckle.

Hagrid will like your idea. According to him, a good location to introduce the Bowtruckles would be the forest.

If you’ve adopted the Bowtruckle earlier, you’ll decide to introduce it to Needlefingers. Otherwise, Hagrid will suggest you befriend one before introducing it to the one he found.

Hagrid will decide to look into Needlefinger’s past in the meantime. He’ll tell you to keep your eyes on the creature.

You’ll nod and say that you’ll ask Penny to help you with that. Shortly after, you will leave Hagrid’s hut.

Your next task is to unlock Bowtruckle. To do that, you will need 40 Red Notebooks. Your Magizoology will also need to be level 3 or higher. If you’ve already done that before, this task will automatically be completed.

Proceed to the forest area of Magical Creatures Reserve when you are ready to introduce the Bowtruckles.

You’ll carefully place Needlefingers’ box on the ground. Shortly after, Penny will arrive and cheerfully greet you.

She’ll be excited to introduce the Bowtruckles. Moments later, Merula will show up. Apparently, she had trouble keeping up with Penny’s pace.

You’ll be surprised to see her. Penny will explain why she asked the Most Powerful Witch at Hogwarts for help. As it seems, Merula was quite intrigued once she heard Needlefingers can pick locks.

You’ll quickly tell her not to get any big ideas and make it clear that you only want to introduce the Bowtruckles.

Thankfully, Merula won’t argue with you about it. Sadly, Needlefingers won’t be willing to leave its box. Penny will find it very odd.

You’ll tell her that Needlefingers is far from an ordinary Bowtruckle. Hopefully, your Bowtruckle might help it open up.

Shortly after, you’ll proceed with the plan.

Introducing the Bowtruckles requires earning five stars within three hours. Three stars are needed to pass.

There are actions with bonus progress tied to Penny and your Bowtruckle. Focus on those to save energy.

Your plan will seem to work, and Needlefingers will open its box. Your Bowtruckle will slowly approach it.

Needlefingers will take a good look at your Bowtruckle, who will seem eager to make a new friend.

You’ll be glad about the way things played out. Unfortunately, the moment you say that, Needlefingers will push your Bowtruckle away and get back into the box.

Penny will be surprised by this turn of events. Merula, on the other hand, will seem to like Needlefingers.

Moments later, your Bowtruckle will return to you. You’ll realize that Needlefingers isn’t interested in socializing.

Penny will wonder if it is protecting its box. Merula will have a different theory.

Unfortunately, no one will be able to say for sure why Needlefingers is acting that way.

By the looks of it, you’ll need to learn more about Bowtruckles. Penny will suggest going to the library.

Merula will offer to keep an eye on Needlefingers in the meantime. You’ll recall what Hagrid said earlier, so you’ll decline her offer.

She’ll decide to go with you to the library and “help” you keep an eye on Needlefingers.

Shortly after, you’ll leave the forest and head back to Hogwarts. Proceed to the library when you are ready to continue.

Upon arriving, you’ll notice the speech bubbles above some of the characters. Tap on those if you are curious to see what they have to say.

Penny will tell you she already pulled every book on Bowtruckles she could find. You’ll thank her for that.

Hopefully, you’ll find some information that will help you get through to Needlefingers.

As it seems, the creature hasn’t left its box ever since you introduced it to your Bowtruckle. Once again, Merula will offer to look after Needlefingers. You’ll kindly decline her offer.

Penny will have an interesting theory.

In any case, you’ll need to do a lot of research to know for sure.

Reading about Bowtruckles requires earning five stars within one hour. Three stars are needed to pass.

According to some books, Bowtruckles prefer to live in the finest wand-quality trees and are very protective of them.

Merula will be disgusted by the fact that Bowtruckles love to eat woodlice.

You’ll wonder if Needlefingers was simply protecting its box. After all, that box is made of redwood. Merula will point at the empty box and say that your theory isn’t very solid.

Both Penny and you will be surprised to see that. You’ll ask Merula if she’s seen where the Bowtruckle went.

Unfortunately, she hasn’t. Penny will assume that Needlefingers didn’t go too far. Suddenly, you’ll hear someone screaming.

Moments later, Madam Pince will approach you, holding Needlefingers in her hand. As it seems, the Bowtruckle was trying to pick the locks on her desk.

She’ll ask if you were the one who brought the creature into the library. There are two options to reply with. While both options will lead to a similar outcome, it is recommended to be honest and select the first option. Don’t worry, Madam Pince won’t punish you for bringing Needlefingers into the library.

Moments later, the Bowtruckle will get back into the box. And luckily, you avoided getting punished.

You’ll suggest leaving the library before Madam Pince comes back. Penny will point out that you haven’t completed the research.

Thankfully, you learned enough to figure out what to do next. Given that Needlefingers left its box to pick the lock on Madam Pince’s desk, it is definitely interested in more than just protecting its home.

Penny will assume why that’s the case.

You’ll recall that Hagrid said that Needlefingers was trying to pick the lock on his trunk.

After thinking about it for a moment, you’ll get an interesting idea.

According to Merula, you shouldn’t be trying to change Needlefingers. You’ll tell her you aren’t planning to change it completely.

Hopefully, with proper guidance, it will learn to behave around other Bowtruckles. Penny will agree with you.

You’ll decide to visit Professor Kettleburn and see if he can help you train Needlefingers.

Head to the Care of Magical Creatures when you are ready to continue. You’ll thank Professor Kettleburn for agreeing to meet with you.

He will admit he is curious to hear more about Needlefingers. You’ll tell him you need his help to train the creature to trust others.

Professor Kettleburn will look forward to training the Bowtruckle. You’ll say that a good start would be training it to come out of its box.

The Professor will assume that Needlefingers is shy. He’ll ask you to tell him more about the creature. You will quickly fill him in.

Apparently, Professor Kettleburn is well-aware that thieves often train Bowtruckles to pick locks for them.

Merula will also say a few words about Needlefingers.

You’ll tell Professor Kettleburn that Needlefingers needs a bit of socializing before you can introduce it to the colony on the reserve.

Luckily, the Professor has something that can help you train Needlefingers. According to him, you can use snacks to train almost any creature.

He will ask if you know what a Bowtruckle’s favorite food is. There are three options to choose from. The correct answer is ‘Woodlice’. Keep in mind that picking one of the other two options will result in rather funny lines of dialogue, so you might want to check them out.

Shortly after, the training session will begin.

To train Needlefingers, you’ll need to earn five stars within eight hours. All five stars are needed to pass.

There are bonus progress actions tied to Needlefingers and Merula. Prioritizing those actions should save you some energy.

Luckily, the plan will seem to work. Professor Kettleburn will decide to put Needlefingers to the final test to see if it can get along with other Bowtruckles.

Moments later, another Bowtruckle will slowly approach Needlefingers. The plan will work, and the creatures will seem to get along.

According to Professor Kettleburn, after a few more training sessions, Needlefingers will be ready to join other Bowtruckles in the colony.

You’ll thank him for his help. You will then decide to visit Hagrid and tell him the good news. Suddenly, you’ll realize that Needlefingers is gone.

Professor Kettleburn will say that Merula has left, too. You’ll recall that she was interested in Needlefingers’ lockpicking abilities.

Hopefully, you’ll be able to find them before they get into trouble. Suddenly, an owl will arrive and deliver a message from Hagrid.

As it seems, Hagrid wants to see you in his hut as soon as possible. Professor Kettleburn will advise you to go there immediately. You’ll decide to follow his advice.

You will need to wait three hours before you can continue. Since you will likely be low on energy at this point, it is recommended to wait and let your energy recharge in the meantime.

Proceed to Hagrid’s Hut once the waiting time is over. Once you arrive, you’ll notice that Hagrid is not alone. Mundungus Fletcher will also be there.

The following lines will be different if this is your first time meeting him.

Apparently, Mundungus is Needlefingers’ owner. He’ll calmly tell you he wants his Bowtruckle back.

He will ask you to tell him where Needlefingers is. There are three options to reply with. This choice won’t significantly impact the story, so feel free to pick whichever option you prefer.

Fletcher will say that you and Hagrid are responsible for anything that happens to his Bowtruckle. Apparently, he heard Hagrid talking about Needlefingers in Hogsmeade.

Your friend will blame himself for talking too much. You’ll say a few words to make him feel better.

Mundungus will make it clear that he wants the Bowtruckle back. And in case you don’t return it to him, he’ll report Hagrid and you to the Ministry.

You’ll be surprised to hear that since he raised Needlefingers to pick locks for him. Fletcher will smile and say that it was all a game.

You’ll try to convince him to allow Needlefingers to stay with you. He wouldn’t be against that, as long as you give him another Bowtruckle.

Apparently, he’d be okay with any Bowtruckle from the reserve. Hagrid won’t like that idea.

You’ll wonder if there’s anything else you can give Mundungus in exchange for letting Needlefingers stay with you. Thankfully, he will agree to hear you out.

To negotiate with Mandungus, you’ll need to earn five stars within three hours. Three stars are needed to pass.

There are bonus progress actions tied to Mundungus and Hagrid. Focus on those actions if you’re looking to save some energy.

In the end, Fletcher will agree to allow Needlefingers to stay with you, as long as you can trade him something of an equal value.

You’ll decide to visit Filch’s office and see if you can find any valuable items there. Proceed to the caretaker’s office when you are ready to continue.

As soon as you get there, you’ll be in for a surprise. You’ll find Merula and Needlefingers picking locks in Filch’s office.

You’ll ask her to step away from the Bowtruckle. She will tell you that Needlefingers is having a great time picking locks with her.

She’ll also point out that the creature is no longer hiding in its box. You will remind her that the Bowtruckle needs a home.

After giving it some thought, Merula will agree with you. She’ll tell you that the two of them had a great time picking locks. You’ll notice Needlefingers smiling after hearing that.

You will then tell Merula that Mundungus Fletcher is the Bowtruckle’s owner.

You’ll also say that you need to find something valuable to trade him for Needlefingers. Otherwise, he’ll take it back.

Needless to say, neither Merula nor Needlefingers will be happy to hear that. She will seem genuinely worried about the creature.

After realizing that she’s showing her vulnerable side, Merula will ask you to forget she said anything.

You’ll smile and say that you don’t want to give Needlefingers back to Mundungus either.

You will tell her that Fletcher is willing to make a trade if you can find something of equal or greater value. According to Merula, that is impossible.

Still, you might be able to find something Mundungus will deem valuable. Merula will say there might be something in the trunk she and Needlefingers opened earlier. You’ll decide to have a look.

Before that, she’ll ask if you are going to tell anyone she got all mushy about Needlefingers. There are two options to reply with. This choice will affect some dialogue lines later on. If you like Merula, it is highly recommended to pick the second option.

Shortly after, the two of you will start searching the box.

To complete this task, you’ll need to earn five stars within eight hours. All five stars are needed to pass.

There are actions with bonus progress tied to Merula and an odd-looking Screaming Yo-Yo. Focus on those actions if you want to save some energy.

Unfortunately, you won’t end up finding anything valuable. The chest will be full of old Screaming Yo-Yos.

Perhaps you can find something valuable elsewhere. Moments later, Needlefingers will start chirping nervously.

You’ll turn around and spot Mrs. Norris. You will realize that it won’t be long before Filch returns to his office, you will quickly decide to get out of there.

Merula will remind you that you still need to find something valuable to trade for Needlefingers. After all, you can’t go back to Mundungus empty-handed.

You’ll tell her to grab the Screaming Yo-Yo with flames on the side. Shortly after, the two of you will leave Filch’s office.

You’ll need to wait three hours before you can continue. Since you will probably be low on energy at this point, it is recommended to wait and let your energy recharge in the meantime.

Proceed to Hagrid’s Hut once the waiting time is over. You’ll tell Hagrid you’ve found Needlefingers while looking for something valuable in Filch’s office.

You will also say that you have something to trade for the Bowtruckle. Hagrid will be glad to hear that.

Needlefingers won’t seem excited to see Mundungus.

Fletcher will tell you to hand over the Bowtruckle to him. You’ll remind him about the trade.

Apparently, Mundungus didn’t expect you will be able to find the Bowtruckle. Hagrid won’t be happy to hear that.

Fletcher will say that he didn’t lie. He’ll explain that Needlefingers is priceless, so there’s nothing equally valuable that can be traded for it.

Mundungus will threaten to report you to the Ministry if you don’t give him the Bowtruckle.

Hagrid will try to convince him to change his mind. Fletcher will calmly say that Needlefingers won’t be able to get along with other Bowtruckles.

You’ll tell him that the creature made significant progress ever since you started training it.

Mundungus will ask you to prove it. There are three options to reply with. This choice won’t significantly impact the story, so feel free to go with the option you prefer.

Sadly, Fletcher won’t be willing to change his mind. He’ll be fairly sure you don’t have anything more valuable than Needlefingers.

Having no other options, you will ask him to take a look at the item you brought. Merula will tell you there is no point. After all, there is no way an old Screaming Yo-Yo could be more valuable than Needlefingers.

Mundungus will seem intrigued after hearing about the Screaming Yo-Yo. He’ll ask if it had little flames on it.

You’ll nod and ask if that means anything to him. He will shake his head and say that it doesn’t. However, you’ll notice there is something he’s not telling you.

Sadly, he won’t tell you the whole story. Instead, he’ll simply ask you to give him Needlefingers. He’ll also want to take the yo-yo since it has no value to you.

You’ll quickly realize that the Screaming Yo-Yo might not be so worthless after all, so you will ask him to tell you the whole story.

Learning the story of the yo-yo requires earning five stars within three hours. Since all five stars are needed to pass, avoid starting this task if you are out of energy.

There are bonus progress actions tied to Hagrid and Mundungus. Prioritize those if you want to save some energy.

In the end, Mundungus will admit that the Screaming Yo-Yo is far from an ordinary one.

Apparently, he got it while he was a first-year student. It was part of a special promotion, and only a few such yo-yos were made. Hagrid will recall those Screaming Yo-Yos.

Mundungus will say that it was his favorite toy when he arrived at Hogwarts. Unfortunately, it was confiscated by Filch, and he never saw it again.

You will ask if he would be willing to trade Needlefingers for his childhood yo-yo. He’ll tell you that the Bowtruckle is far more worthy than the yo-yo.

Still, he will be emotionally attached to his childhood toy, so he will agree to make a trade.

Merula will be incredibly happy with this turn of events. Fletcher will kindly ask you not to tell anyone about the trade.

The choice you’ve made while talking to Merula in Filch’s office will take effect here.

Fletcher will be glad to finally get his old yo-yo back. Hagrid will thank you for going out of your way to help Needlefingers.

Soon enough, you will be able to introduce it to the Bowtruckle colony. The following lines will differ, depending on the choice you’ve made while talking to Merula in Filch’s office.
