Professor Introduction

Welcome back, apprentices of alteration!

Today’s lesson will require a keen eye and a steady wand. We’ll explore how to use magic to straighten bent objects, flatten curved items, and reshape things to their intended form — a spell that reinforces the foundations of structure, symmetry, and magical discipline.

As always, I’m Professor Calista Merrow, and I believe that attention to detail is not only an art but a virtue in Transfiguration.

Spell Summary

  • Spell Name: Straightening Spell
  • Incantation: Rectifico
  • Pronunciation: rek-TEE-fi-koh
  • Wand Movement: Downward zig-zag, then a direct upward flick
  • Effect: Straightens, flattens, or reshapes an item to a regular or ideal form
  • Difficulty Level: 2/5
  • Category: Reshaping Transfiguration

When to Use Rectifico

  • Straightening a bent wand, quill, or broomstick
  • Reshaping a creased hat or crumpled parchment
  • Flattening or squaring materials for potion preparation or magical crafting
  • Correcting items distorted by beginner-level spell accidents

Spell Effects – What Happens?

When cast successfully:

  • A soft silver ripple will pass over the object
  • The item will visibly straighten or reshape, returning to its natural or ideal form
  • A humming or “click” sound may accompany perfect alignment
  • Inaccurate casting may cause the object to snap, curl further, or stiffen awkwardly

Classroom Activity

You’ll be practicing Rectifico on a set of:

  • Bent metal spoons
  • Crushed paper hats
  • Twisted candlesticks

Students who manage perfect alignment with a single cast will receive bonus points — and a shimmering enchanted parchment bookmark as a keepsake!

Spell Pairings

Rectifico works well when combined with:

  • Reparo – Fix and then reshape broken items
  • Colovaria – Restore structure, then recolour
  • Reducio / Engorgio – After reshaping, resize the object if necessary
  • Lapifors (advanced) – Transform and then refine the resulting form

Did You Know?

The Straightening Spell is frequently used by wandmakers, broomstick technicians, and magical sculptors. It’s also used by Hogwarts caretakers to realign paintings and torches in the corridors!

Some believe Rectifico was once used to correct wizarding architecture that shifted over time due to lingering magical surges.

Professor Merrow’s Final Thought

“Order is not the enemy of magic — it is its skeleton,” Professor Merrow says as she elegantly repairs a crooked picture frame on the wall with a single wave of her wand. “In learning to restore form, you begin to master the invisible lines that magic follows.”
