A Record of the Past Part 2

Introduction

Hello everyone, welcome to Part 2 of our Walkthrough for A Record of the Past Adventure of Harry Potter Hogwarts Mystery. Previously, a strange magical affliction began spreading through Hogwarts and Hogsmeade, leaving even Professor Dumbledore mysteriously affected. As you searched for answers, you spoke with Ben, who first experienced the symptoms while talking to Ambrosius Flume — a faint, haunting music followed by a stinging sensation. 

Your investigation led you to Madam Rosmerta, who revealed that this wasn’t the first time such symptoms had appeared — they date back to the days of the First Wizarding War. Now, with growing concerns that this affliction may be tied to dark forces from the past, you head to the library, determined to uncover the truth and stop the threat before it spreads any further.

Proceed to the Library when you are ready. When you arrive at the library and gather the books you need, you’ll notice that none of them mention anything about magical afflictions. 

However, nearby you’ll spot Merula, who seems to be observing you. She’ll make a guess, suggesting that you’re trying to find a solution to the magical affliction that’s spreading through Hogwarts, and she’ll ask if she’s right. There are two different options to choose from. These options will influence some dialogue that will follow, but they won’t impact the story.

It turns out that the books on magical afflictions were taken by Merula, who is determined to solve the situation before you. That’s why you couldn’t find a single book on the subject. She’ll smugly remark that you shouldn’t expect her to share the books, claiming you wouldn’t understand them anyway. 

You’ll respond by saying you can prove that you do understand them. The two of you will agree to quiz each other after studying the books to see who truly knows more.

To study the subjects, you need to earn five stars within one hour. All five stars are required to pass. Since this task requires a lot of energy, it is recommended to start it with a full energy bar.

Bonus progress actions are tied to Merula and the books. Prioritize these actions to save some energy.

She will then ask you what spell causes the target to break out into song. The correct answer is “Cantis”.

Next, she will ask you: Who was the Minister for Magic at the beginning of the Wizarding War.
The correct answer is “Eugenia Jenkins”.

In any case, Merula will say she’s certain she knows more than you about You-Know-Who and that she even knows two people who were involved in the war — Professor Dumbledore and Professor McGonagall. 

This will give you the idea to speak with them, as they might be able to provide you with details that could help you solve this mystery. You’ll decide to visit Professor McGonagall first.

Go to the Transfiguration Classroom to continue the story. Upon arriving, you’ll notice the speech bubbles above some of the characters. Tap on those if you’re curious to see what they have to say.

You will tell the professor that you are trying to learn more about the mysterious magical affliction affecting much of Hogwarts, emphasizing how much it is impacting Tulip and Ben, who are in the hospital wing. 

She will say that she understands your concern but is unable to provide any information because there is a fine line between keeping students informed and spreading unnecessary rumors. She will assure you that the faculty is working tirelessly to find a solution to the affliction. Then she will ask you do you doubt their capability.

There are three different options to choose from. These options will influence some dialogue that will follow, but they won’t impact the story.

You will add that the mysterious affliction isn’t limited to Hogwarts; it’s spreading throughout Hogsmeade as well. Mr. Flume mentioned it’s in Godric’s Hollow too. Madam Rosmerta also told you she experienced the same affliction in the past, during the rise of You-Know-Who. 

Professor McGonagall will be very surprised that you discovered all this on your own. Following that, you will ask if she can tell you more about the Wizarding War, since she lived through it. She will say she doesn’t talk about it often because it was a time full of tragedies.

To discuss war memories, you need to earn five stars within three hours. All five stars are required to pass. Since this task requires a lot of energy, it is recommended to start it with a full energy bar.

Bonus progress actions are tied to Professor McGonagall and your character. Prioritize these actions to save some energy. 

You will learn that Professor McGonagall lost many people she cared about during the Wizarding War—people who knew what was truly right, who didn’t crave power but longed for a united community. She will emphasize how important it is to never give up, even in the darkest of times.

You’ll also ask about Aberforth’s role in the Wizarding War, and she will explain that Aberforth was an important ally.

As the owner of the Hog’s Head Inn, he was able to gather crucial information. When you ask if he might be able to help with the magical affliction, she’ll say she doesn’t know—but she won’t stop your investigation, and she’ll express how valuable everything you’ve shared has been.

With that, you’ll decide to go find Aberforth, hoping he might know something that could help.

Proceed to the Hog’s Head Inn when you are ready. Upon arriving, you’ll notice the speech bubbles above some of the characters. Tap on those if you’re curious to see what they have to say.  When Aberforth sees you, he’ll tell you that it’s not the best time for a friendly visit and suggest you grab a Butterbeer somewhere else.

But you’ll explain that you’re not here for a drink—you’re investigating the magical affliction that’s spreading across Hogsmeade and Hogwarts. You’ll add that you believe it might be connected to a similar affliction from the days when You-Know-Who was on the rise.

Aberforth will admit he had the same thought but insist that as a student, you shouldn’t be worrying about things like this and that you should stay safe.

When you tell him that several of your friends have already been affected and that you want to help them, he’ll notice how determined you are. Despite his reservations, he’ll agree to share his theory about the magical affliction.

To discover Aberforth’s theory, you need to earn five stars within three hours. All five stars are required to pass. Since this task requires a lot of energy, it is recommended to start it with a full energy bar.

Bonus progress actions are tied to Aberforth. Prioritize these actions to save some energy. 

Aberforth will add that this affliction could be a curse from back then, possibly the work of a supporter of You-Know-Who. He’ll suggest that the curse may have gone dormant when its creator fled or went into hiding after the war, and now that they’re back, so is their wicked creation. He’ll then look at you and ask if you find it hard to believe his theory.

There are three different options to choose from. These options will influence some dialogue that will follow, but they won’t impact the story.

You and Aberforth will agree that, given the affliction has spread from Hogsmeade all the way to Godric’s Hollow, the best course of action is to travel there and investigate for any potential clues. Aberforth will also give you enough Floo Powder to make the journey possible, and you’ll thank him for his help.

Go to Godric’s Hollow to continue the story. If you’ve never been to Godric’s Hollow before, that will be noted here. In any case, upon arrival, you’ll spot Dumbledore and Mundungus Fletcher engaged in conversation. Following that, you’ll approach Dumbledore and mention that you thought he had the affliction and ask if he shouldn’t be resting. He’ll respond that he appreciates your concern, but with Hogwarts in danger, he refuses to rest until the crisis is resolved. He adds that he was checking in with an old acquaintance regarding matters from the past.

You’ll explain that you’re conducting your own investigation and have just spoken with his brother, Aberforth. Dumbledore will express hope that Aberforth hasn’t been afflicted, and you’ll reassure him that you don’t think so—he seemed normal. Following that, he’ll ask why you’ve taken it upon yourself to investigate the magical affliction, especially considering the danger it might expose you to.

There are three different options to choose from. These options will influence some dialogue that will follow, but they won’t impact the story.

You’ll explain that Aberforth believes the magical affliction is a curse from the Wizarding War, created by a Dark witch or wizard. Dumbledore will pause for a moment, then nod thoughtfully and say that he believes that theory may very well be correct. He’ll add that, in fact, he thinks he may have identified the very nature of the curse itself.

You’ll ask him to tell you more about it—and seeing your determination and sincerity, he’ll agree to share what he knows.

To identify the curse, you need to earn five stars within eight hours. All five stars are required to pass. Since this task requires a lot of energy, it is recommended to start it with a full energy bar.

Bonus progress actions are tied to Professor Dumbledore and your character. Prioritize these actions to save some energy. Slide the screen left and right to check all available actions. 

You will learn that the affliction is caused by a curse known as the Frequensting—a rare variant of the Stinging Hex. It’s a remnant of the Wizarding War, one that has remained dormant for years. Dumbledore believes the curse is being spread through an enchanted object. If you can find that object, there’s a chance you can put an end to the affliction altogether.

Just as he reveals this, you’ll hear the faint sound of music and feel a familiar sting. Dumbledore will quickly advise you to return to Hogwarts immediately and continue your investigation in the Hospital Wing, where the affliction seems to be most active.
