Proceed to the Library when you are ready. When you arrive, you’ll thank your friends for agreeing to help you with this mysterious search for the creature. You’ll explain that last night, you and Ben spotted a pair of glowing eyes watching you from the waters of the Black Lake, and that you also found two messages in bottles along the lakeshore — each one a desperate cry for help.
You’ll admit that you’re still not sure what kind of creature you’re dealing with, and you will then suggest doing some research to properly identify what kind of magical creature the Creature from the Black Lake might be

You’ll realize that you’ve narrowed it down to three possible creatures. Penny will then ask what you think it might be — a Merperson, a Kelpie, or a Kappa?
There are three different options to choose from. These options will influence some dialogue that will follow, but they won’t impact the story.

Murphy will then ask how confident you are in your theory about what kind of creature the Creature from the Black Lake is.

In any case, you’ll realize that with messages in bottles washing ashore and asking for help, Hogwarts might be in danger. You’ll tell Murphy to update the professors and show them the messages in bottles you’ve found, which he’ll agree to do. Penny will say she’ll gather any other bottles around Hogwarts, as they might hold more clues. Meanwhile, you’ll tell Ben that the two of you should head to Hagrid to see if he can help.
Go to the Hagrid’s Hut to continue the story. When you arrive, you’ll tell Hagrid that you’ve been investigating what kind of creature the one from the Black Lake might be. Here, you’ll share the creature you previously chose as your theory. Regardless of which creature you name, Hagrid will say that you’ve done a great job investigating, but that he’ll think your theory has a few holes in it. He’ll then begin to explain his reasoning.

Unfortunately, there are no bonus progress actions available in this task. Following that, you’ll ask him if your theory is wrong, what kind of creature he thinks you’re dealing with.
He’ll say that he’s not sure. It could be something so rare and novel that it’s never been written down in any book, or it could be something so old that any record of it has been lost over time.

He will then wish you good luck, and you’ll decide to meet with Penny to see if she has found any new clues.

However, a sense of worry will arise. Several of these messages seem to mention Penny by name, and she still hasn’t appeared, which is strange. You’ll immediately set off to search the rest of the castle to find out where Penny is. In the meantime, you’ll receive an owl from Professor McGonagall, urgently summoning you to her classroom.
When you arrive, you’ll inform Professor McGonagall that a Hogwarts student has gone missing and ask if she has any information to aid the ongoing search.
You’ll quickly realize she’s referring to Penny and tell the professor that she and you have been investigating the Creature from the Black Lake, and that you found messages in bottles mentioning her by name — she could be the creature’s next victim. You’ll add that the last you saw, Penny was out collecting messages in bottles that you believe are tied to the creature.
However, Professor McGonagall will clarify that it’s not Penny who’s missing, but Merula Snyde.
There are two different options to choose from. Both of them will eventually lead to the same outcome, so feel free to take your pick.

Professor McGonagall will tell you to share everything you know so that together you might figure out what has happened.

You’ll thank Professor McGonagall for filling you in about Merula’s disappearance, noting that the situation is even more dire than you had originally assumed. She’ll respond that, given the information you’ve shared, it’s reasonable to assume these disappearances are linked.
When you ask what she thinks the Creature from the Black Lake might be, she’ll admit that she doesn’t know, and that none of the professors are certain what exactly it is. It could be a danger never before encountered in the magical world, an ancient evil of unknowable nature.
She’ll then say that until this mystery is resolved, students are forbidden from approaching the Black Lake for any reason. She’ll thank you for your help, but of course, you won’t be willing to let things rest so easily.
