[Disclaimer: This walkthrough will feature the gameplay from the perspective of a Year 4 student. Since the adventure is available for students of Year 3 and above, the star and attribute requirements for certain tasks might be different for you, depending on your current progress of the main story.]
Upon arriving, you will be able to interact with some of your classmates and see what they have to say.
Ismelda will tell you she’s glad that you got invited to the Sphinx Club. You will be surprised to hear her say those words.
As it seems, she is simply excited about being invited into the Sphinx Club, which is why she’s in a good mood.
You will say that hanging out with friends in a fancy room isn’t the only thing about the clubs. Ismelda will nod and add that there’s the opportunity to study some advanced magic-related things.
You will recall the classes that are important for the Sphinx Club.
Ismelda will remind you of the one you overlooked. She’ll say that she’s been studying Transfiguration lately. The possibilities are pretty much endless when it comes to Transfiguration.
Apparently, Ismelda wants to use her magical knowledge to take revenge on her sister for turning her Puffskein pink.
You’ll assume there has to be some other way she can avenge her pink Puffskein.
As it turns out, Ismelda is hoping that being a member of the Sphinx Club can help her figure it out.
You will then get to discuss the Clubs with her. Doing so requires earning five stars within three hours. Only one star is needed to pass.
If you are looking to save as much energy as possible, it is recommended to earn a single star and wait for the timer to run out. It’s also worth mentioning there are bonus progress actions linked to Ismelda and your character.
However, if you want to earn some additional rewards and a chance for Chocolate Frogs, it is recommended to fully complete this task.
Ismelda will admit that she isn’t really interested in the Dragon and Hippogriff Clubs. You’ll figure out that the Sphinx Club suits her well.
She will smile and say that a lot of academically-minded students are drawn to the Sphinx Club. Also, it opens up a lot of possibilities when it comes to pranks.
You’ll add that studying Transfiguration can help one come up with a lot of interesting prank ideas. Ismelda will wish that she can Transfigure her sister into a Murtlap.
On the other hand, she could also turn herself into a Basilisk, or some other magical creature. You will remember hearing that Self-Transfiguration is extremely difficult to master.
The Most Powerful Witch at Hogwarts will disagree with you.
You will remind her of the things Professor McGonagall said about the Self-Transfiguration. These lines of dialogue will differ slightly, depending on the year you’re in.
Ismelda will agree with you, saying that this form of Transfiguration is extremely dangerous. Merula will proudly say that she’s been studying full Self-Transfiguration lately. Once again, you’ll remind her how dangerous it is to attempt that kind of magic.
Merula will assume that you think she’s not capable of doing it. There are two options to respond with. This choice will have some impact later on, but it won’t heavily influence the story, so you can feel free to pick whichever option you prefer.
The Most Powerful Witch at Hogwarts will be very confident in her magical skills.
Shortly after, she will leave the club room. You will ask Ismelda if she wants to follow her to make sure she doesn’t do anything reckless.
Ismelda will definitely want to follow Merula, albeit for a different reason.
Proceed to the Clocktower Courtyard when you are ready to continue. When you arrive, you will notice the speech bubbles above some of your friends. Tap on those if you want to see what they have to say to you.
You’ll ask Merula if she is still studying full Self-Transfiguration. She will nod and say that she is very determined to master this form of Transfiguration.
Ismelda will add that performing such a spell would surely impress every member of the Sphinx Club.
Apparently, Merula only wants to prove that she is the Most Powerful Witch at Hogwarts. You’ll ask if she is worried since there is a number of ways Self-Transfiguration can go wrong. She will simply say it can only go wrong for the unskilled witches and wizards.
Professor McGonagall will approach and ask if you are discussing Self-Transfiguration. Apparently, she’s overheard parts of your conversation.
Ismelda will quickly tell her Merula is interested in it. You will ask the Professor if discussing that form of Transfiguration is allowed.
She’ll nod and say that you can freely discuss it. On the other hand, practicing Self-Transfiguration is a completely different matter.
Merula will say that she’s no longer a first-year, and she is eager to learn and grow more powerful.
Professor McGonagall will decide to explain what would happen should she attempt full Self-Transfiguration.
Listening to the Professor requires earning five stars within three hours. Three stars are needed to pass.
The only bonus progress action here is linked to Ismelda. Focus on her actions if you want to save a bit of energy.
Once the Professor is done explaining, you will realize the dangers of full Self-Transfiguration. It’s incredibly risky, even for N.E.W.T. students.
Professor McGonagall will remind you and your classmates about the purpose of the Sphinx Club.
She will also make it perfectly clear she will disband the club should anyone attempt full Self-transfiguration.
Shortly after, she will leave the courtyard. You will be relieved by this turn of events. Unfortunately, Merula will still be determined to try full Self-Transfiguration. Ismelda will remind her of McGonagall’s words.
She will also point out the possible ways things could play out.
Sadly, Merula will be too stubborn to give up. There are two options to respond to her. Ultimately, this choice won’t have any big impact on the story, but if you like Merula, it is somewhat recommended to pick the second option.
In the end, you will manage to convince Merula to at least research Self-Transfiguration before attempting it. Proceed to the Library when you are ready to continue.
Upon arriving, you will notice the speech bubbles above some of the characters. Tap on those if you want to see what they have to say.
Ismelda will gather some books on Transfiguration. You’ll suggest starting with the advanced books. Ismelda will point at one such book.
Apparently, that is your Transfiguration text. Merula will say that she’s already read it. You’ll suggest asking Madam Pince to recommend you some other books on the subject.
Unfortunately, that would be too risky as she might inform Professor McGonagall about it. Merula will be very eager to get this part over with.
You will ask her to tell you more details about the Self-Transfiguration she wants to perform. She will cheekily smile at you and ask for your help with the research in return.
Studying Self-Transfiguration requires earning five stars within an hour. One star is needed to pass for Year 2-5 students. Three stars are required to pass for Year 6+ students.
There are bonus progress actions tied to Merula and the book in front of your character. Prioritize these if you want to save some energy.
Once you’re done studying, Merula will say that she plans to fully Self-Transfigure into a Thunderbird.
You’ll suggest trying something simpler. You will also point out how complicated full Self-Transfiguration is.
Despite all your words, Merula will be as stubborn as ever. Thankfully, Ismelda will be on your side and she’ll try to dissuade her friend from attempting this dangerous magic.
Sadly, no words will be enough to convince Merula. Ismelda will remind her that Professor McGonagall is going to disband the Sphinx Club if she finds out. You will also say a few words to try and convince her.
Merula will ask if you think that the members of the Sphinx Club will not be impressed by a full Self-Transfiguration. There are two options to reply with. Other than some minor dialogue changes, this choice won’t have any significant impact on the story, so feel free to go with the option you prefer.
In the end, Merula will admit that she is doing it to prove to everyone she is the Most Powerful Witch at Hogwarts.
She will ask you to meet her in the Sphinx Club room, so go there when you are ready. When you arrive, you will be able to interact with some of the club members by tapping on the speech bubbles above them.
You will notice that most of the Sphinx Club members have arrived. Merula will be incredibly happy seeing that so many of them will be able to witness her display of magical skill. She’ll say that she wants to transfigure herself into a Thunderbird.
Once again, Ismelda will remind her it is a bad idea. The option you chose during the first task will take effect here. If you told her she can do it, you will encourage her to go on with the full Self-Transfiguration. Otherwise, you will agree with Ismelda and say it is too dangerous.
Merula will gather everyone to make an announcement.
Listening to Merula requires earning five stars within three hours. All five stars are needed to pass, which is why it’s recommended not to start this task if you are low on energy.
There are two 5-cost actions linked to your character. Focus on your actions if you want to save a bit of energy.
You will ask Merula if she is ready to perform the full Self-Transfiguration. She will nod as she prepares her wand to cast the spell.
Moments later, you will notice that her Transfiguration worked… just not in the way she planned.
Instead of transforming herself into a Thunderbird, Merula will end up turning into a Flobberworm.
Ismelda will say that she knew something bad would happen. You will ask Merula to change back. Unfortunately, she won’t be able to do that.
As for Ismelda, she will fear that Professor McGonagall will disband the Sphinx Club as soon as she finds out what happened.
She will ask you to help fix things and turn Merula back into her original form. There are two options to respond with. If you like Merula, it is recommended to pick the first one. Otherwise, feel free to go with either of the options.
You will suggest meeting in the Artefact Room.
This will mark the end of Part 1 of Welcome to the Sphinx Club adventure. Hit the Collect button to claim your rewards. You will receive 300 Coins.
What will happen next? Will you be able to find a way to reverse the Transfiguration? Find out in the next part of this adventure.
