Introduction

Hello everyone, welcome to our Walkthrough for Chapter Four of Year One of Harry Potter Hogwarts Mystery. In the last chapter, you were tricked by Merula Snyde and lured into a room with the Devil’s Snare. Luckily enough, Rubeus Hagrid came to your rescue, and you managed to leave unharmed. You also had your first Flying lesson in which you learned how to Summon your Broom.

Afterward, you went to have some fun and play Gobstones with Rowan. Sadly, you were interrupted by Merula who used the Flipendo charm to knock you off your feet. Now, you need to find some way to defend yourself from her bullying and stop her from harming anyone else.

For the first task, you should go to the training grounds to meet with your Prefect. When you get there, you will be greeted by Rowan.

Once you arrive at the Training Grounds, Rowan will ask you why you invited a prefect for a meeting. You explain that you wish someone to teach you how to duel so that Merula can’t bully you or Rowan anymore.

After that, you’ll be asked if you are angry about Merula’s accusations about your brother’s expulsion. There are two options to choose from. Each of these will grant you some attribute points, so feel free to go with the option you prefer.

year 1 chapter 4 2030

Shortly after explaining the situation about your brother to Rowan, your Prefect will show up. You will say that you need help to learn how to duel.

You’ll learn that your Prefect already knows about the incident with Merula. Rowan will urge the Prefect to teach you some self-defense because Merula might challenge you again. After that, your Prefect will agree to teach you.

But first, you will need to learn one offensive move, one creative advantage, and one way to heal yourself. Your Prefect will also say that you can find a secret dueling book in the Artefact Room. That book should help you learn more about dueling.

So, let’s get right to it. Hit the GO button and proceed to the Artefact Room.

Once you arrive, Rowan will be curious to hear what you think of the place. There are three options to choose from. None of these will have any significant impact on the story, so feel free to pick the option you prefer.

year 1 chapter 4 2070

Rumors say that untold stories are held in the Artefact Room. Rowan will be very curious and excited but will try to focus this time on searching for the dueling book you need.

You’ll then start searching for the book. This task will require you to earn five stars within one hour, but in order to pass, you only need to get one star.

If you want to get all the bonus stars, it is recommended to have full energy before starting the task.

year 1 chapter 4 2080

Complete the actions by tapping on the glowing objects to fill the Star Meter. This shouldn’t be too difficult. Once you obtain all five stars, hit the Collect button to continue.

You will manage to find the book, and shortly after, you will experience a strange vision. You will see a sequence of locations and creatures: a staircase, suits of armor from Hogwarts halls, cursed ice spreading across the floor, armor from Hogwarts fighting, an apparition, an Acromantula spider, a dragon, and a mysterious room with a glowing pillar inside. You will quickly tell Rowan about it.

After explaining the vision to Rowan, your next task will be to meet up in the Great Hall. There is, however, an hour and a half waiting period before you can proceed with that task, so you can either wait a bit or use some gems to speed up the process. Since you will most likely be low on energy at this point, it is recommended to wait until this timer runs out. That way, your energy will recharge in the meantime.

year 1 chapter 4 2100

At the same time, you will receive the Magical Pets side quest. This quest doesn’t involve spending any energy, so you can go ahead and complete it since you’ll need to wait a bit to continue with the main story.

Proceed to the courtyard once you are ready to meet with Hagrid.

Hagrid will wonder if you’ve ever considered getting a magical creature pet. You will recall that those kinds of pets aren’t authorized at Hogwarts. Hagrid will smile and say that you simply need to be subtle and discreet about it.

year 1 chapter 4 2120

He will tell you to go to your dorm room if you want to get a magical pet. Simply proceed there when you are ready.

As soon as you arrive, the side quest will be completed, and you will earn some nice rewards. You will receive 50 Empathy Points, 1 Gem, and 100 Experience points. This will also unlock the option for you to adopt various pets. After you do that, you can occasionally tap on them to receive some energy.

Once you are able to continue with the main story, proceed to the Great Hall to meet with Rowan.

year 1 chapter 4 2150

You’ll have a brief conversation, after which you’ll get the opportunity to improve your friendship level with Rowan. This will introduce you to another mini-game called Meal With a Friend. In short, the point of this game is to have a conversation with your friend during a meal and to discuss some topic.

Every time a friend asks you something, you will have three different responses, each tied to one of the attributes. If you give them a good enough answer you’ll fill up the Diamond Meter. Having the attribute tied to the answer high will also contribute to that goal.

Tap on the Handshake icon to continue. A window will show you the recommended attribute levels for the task as well as the topic you are discussing with your friend. Once you are ready, hit the Start button to begin.

year 1 chapter 4 2160

Basically, try to select the options that will convince your friend to help you and you will have no problem filling the Diamond meter. Below are the questions and answers to them.

  • Why must we learn to duel now? – We have to stop Merula. (Courage)
  • Do you trust our Prefect’s help? – Yes, our Prefect wants to help. (Empathy)
  • I’m concerned about your health… – I appreciate your concern. (Empathy)
  • What if you hear voices again? – I’ll be safe with you around. (Empathy)
  • Do you fear you’ve gone mad? – No. If I go mad, I’ll seek help. (Knowledge)
  • Why do you want my support? – We’re stronger together. (Empathy)

When you are done, tap the Collect button to continue. After a bit more talking, Rowan will ask which of the Prefect’s requirements you consider most important. There are three options to choose from.

This choice won’t change the story significantly, so you can feel free to pick whichever option you prefer.

year 1 chapter 4 2200

You’ll also learn from Rowan that Professor Flitwick is a champion dueler! This is a very important piece of information, and if he agrees to teach you some things about dueling, it would significantly increase your chances against Merula.

So, your next task would be to go to Clocktower Courtyard and meet with Professor Flitwick. When you arrive, you’ll notice him standing there, waiting for you. Tapping on the exclamation mark will start the conversation about dueling.

Eventually, he’ll ask why you want to duel. You have three different options to respond with. Each one will award you with five points for one attribute, but the outcome is the same.

year 1 chapter 4 2230

After a bit of convincing, he’ll agree to teach you a spell – The Disarming Charm – Expelliarmus. Learning this will require you to earn five stars within one hour. Two stars are needed to pass. If you start with a full energy bar, this shouldn’t be too difficult.

year 1 chapter 4 2240

Complete actions by tapping on various glowing objects in order to fill up the Star Meter.

year 1 chapter 4 2250

Once you obtain all five stars, tap on the Collect button to continue. The Professor will ask you to cast the Disarming Charm on him. Trace the path shown on the screen in order to do so.

year 1 chapter 4 2260

If you do it right, Professor Flitwick will praise your performance. He’ll then ask you to promise him that you will only duel as a last resort. You have two different options. This choice will have an effect during a dialogue in the next chapter, but it won’t change the story in any big way, so feel free to pick either option.

year 1 chapter 4 2270

Professor Flitwick will remind you once again that unauthorized dueling is strictly forbidden by school rules and breaking it can result in being expelled. This might make things a bit more complicated since you definitely don’t want to get expelled.

Anyway, the Disarming Charm will surely be useful in the future. Your next task is to meet with Rowan, so proceed to the training grounds when you are ready.

When you get there, you will tell Rowan you learned an offensive move from Professor Flitwick. Luckily, your friend managed to find the spell that will give you the creative advantage – The Tickling Charm, Rictusempra. After a bit of talking, you’ll receive the task to learn the spell.

To learn Rictusempra, you’ll need to obtain five stars within one hour. Assuming you start with a full energy bar, this shouldn’t prove too difficult to accomplish.

year 1 chapter 4 2290

Like before, complete actions and fill up the Star Meter.

year 1 chapter 4 2300

Afterward, Rowan will tell you to test the spell. You will be slightly surprised at this request. Your friend will wonder what’s holding you back. You have two options to respond with. Each of those will yield some attribute points, but the outcome, in general, is the same – Rowan will end up as your test subject.

year 1 chapter 4 2310

Trace the wand movement on the screen to cast Rictusempra on your friend. Once you are successful, Rowan will start laughing uncontrollably. In other words, the test will be successful. That’s another spell added to your dueling arsenal.

Rowan will tell you that Snape is planning to teach the class how to brew Wiggenweld Potion. Since that potion is used to heal injuries, learning how to brew it will definitely come in handy during your duel with Merula.

Now that you learned to cast Rictusempra, it is time to do the last part of this chapter – learning to brew Wiggenweld Potion. Tap on the GO button and proceed to the Potions classroom.

When you get there, you will notice that some students have speech bubbles above them. Tap on those if you want to check out what they have to say. After that, tap on the exclamation mark to continue.

year 1 chapter 4 2350

You will learn that Merula asked Snape to teach Wiggenweld Potion. In other words, she might be planning to use it during the duel, too. Shortly after, the lesson will start.

In order to learn how to brew Wiggenweld Potion, you will need to earn five stars within an hour. Two stars are required to pass.

year 1 chapter 4 2360

Like before, tap on various actions to complete them and fill up the star meter.

year 1 chapter 4 2370

Once you are done brewing the potion, Snape will praise your potion-making performance (in his own way) but will say that Merula is much better at Potions in general. You have three options to respond with. This is one of the important decisions since the outcome differs quite a bit.

If you select either of the first two options, you’ll be reprimanded and you won’t gain anything other than some attribute points. Even worse, if you pick the second option, you will lose ten House points. However, if you go with the option to appease Snape, you’ll get ten Empathy points and you’ll also be rewarded with ten House points.

year 1 chapter 4 2380

This will conclude Chapter 4 of Year 1. Hit the Collect button to claim your rewards. You will receive 75 Coins and 150 Experience points.

Now you learned everything you need to duel Merula. But what will happen when you confront her? Will you manage to defeat her in a duel? Find out in the next chapter of Harry Potter Hogwarts Mystery!
