Chapter 5 – The duel
Hello everyone, welcome to our Walkthrough for Chapter Five of Year One of Harry Potter Hogwarts Mystery. In the previous one, you obtained the secret dueling book from the Artefact room. While you were there, you experienced a strange vision about the Cursed Vaults.
Afterward, Professor Flitwick taught you the Disarming Charm – Expelliarmus. You also learned the Tickling Charm – Rictusempra from the dueling book. In this chapter, you will finally have a chance to put a stop to Merula’s cruelty.
So, let’s get right to it. Hit the Start button and proceed to the Charms classroom to attend the lesson.

When you get inside the classroom, you’ll notice that several students have something to tell you. Tapping on their speech bubbles will reveal what they have to say.
Afterward, Professor Flitwick will explain some of the basic things about Levitation Charm and the lesson will start. This one requires you to earn five stars within three hours. It is somewhat recommended to start it with full energy.
Like before, complete actions to fill up the star meter, but keep one thing in mind. Actions that require five energy points to complete will, in general, fill up more of the Star Meter per energy spent. Also, give it your best to complete mini tasks for additional Empathy points.
Lastly, trace the path on the screen to successfully cast the spell.
When you are done, hit the Collect button to claim your rewards. You can also claim 5 Gems in the Charms section of your Hogwarts Record.
Now that you’re done with the lesson, you can head to the training grounds to continue the story. Your Prefect will be impressed that you learned Rictusempra and Expelliarmus. You will also mention that you learned how to brew Wiggenweld Potion.
Your Prefect will then ask you to duel Rowan. This is one opportunity to find out how the dueling system works. Tapping on the crossed wands will open the dueling window.
You can see the recommended attribute levels for the opponent you’re facing, and your strength will be determined by your attribute levels.
While dueling, you can select one of three different stances: Sneaky, Defensive, and Aggressive. They work in a similar manner to Rock, Paper, Scissors. To start with, you’ll need to select one of them.
After that, your stance will compare to the one your opponent chose, and the outcome will be determined.
The winner will get to use one of the moves tied to their chosen stance first. Each of these moves is linked to one of the attributes and having that specific attribute at a high level will increase the effectiveness of the move.
In case of a draw, the dueler with lower stamina will regenerate some of it. After you win, tap the Collect button to continue. Your Prefect will praise both you and Rowan and will encourage you to continue training to further hone your skills.
Your next story task will be confronting Merula, but you will need to wait an hour and a half before you can continue. Once the waiting time is over, proceed to the Clocktower Courtyard to confront Merula.
When you arrive, you’ll notice quite a commotion there. Merula cornered poor Ben Copper and started throwing all sorts of insults his way. Sadly, none of the other students was bold enough to stand up to her… no one but you! After a bit of arguing, you’ll have two options to deal with the situation.
If you remember Professor Flitwick’s words, you should know that striking first could have dire consequences, so it is strongly recommended to refuse to duel. In that case, Merula will cast Flipendo charm, and your character will fall to the ground. Once you’re back on your feet, tap on the crossed wands icon to continue.
The task window will show you the recommended attribute levels for this duel.
This duel is considerably more difficult compared to the practice you had with Rowan. However, there is a catch. If you constantly go Aggressive, you will be able to use Expelliarmus Charm to deal a decent amount of damage and you’ll also be able to stun Merula occasionally, which will cause her to lose a turn. That will significantly increase your chances of winning the duel.
After winning the duel, your character will use the Expelliarmus Charm to disarm Merula. This will completely catch her off guard.
With this, you’ll not just win the duel, but embarrass her in front of everyone. This is a blow she won’t soon forget. She’ll then start raging and won’t even notice the two professors behind her.
Professor Snape will suspect that you broke the policy of unauthorized dueling. He will ask you if you are aware of that rule. Professor Flitwick will be on your side, and he will try to defend you. Alas, Snape will be stubborn, and he’ll tell you and Merula to meet him in the West Towers to face the consequences of the unauthorized dueling.
This will mark the end of Chapter 5 of Year 1. Hit the Collect button to claim your rewards. You will receive 100 Coins and 200 Experience points.
What will happen next? Will Snape punish you for dueling Merula? Find out in the next chapter of Harry Potter Hogwarts Mystery!
