Chapter 8 – Barnaby Lee

Introduction

Hello everyone, welcome to our Walkthrough for Chapter Eight of Year Three of Harry Potter Hogwarts Mystery. In the previous chapter, Tulip and you went and opened Jacob’s room. Apparently, there was a Boggart inside and it took the form of Voldemort.

Both of you ran away, terrified, and decided it’s probably best if you learn the Boggart-Banishing Spell. Luckily, there was a scroll in the library with detailed instructions for learning Riddikulus. Thanks to it, you were able to learn that spell and defeat the Boggart.

Afterward, you searched the room and found the note saying that the next vault is most likely somewhere within the library. Once you start this chapter, you will be met with a waiting period of three hours. Because of that, you should focus on completing the lessons part of the chapter first. Hit the GO button and proceed to the Potions Classroom.

In order to unlock Doxycide lesson, you need to earn a total of nine stars from Potions classes. There is a number of different class combinations you can take to accomplish this. Simply find the one that suits you the most and when you are ready, hit Start to begin.

Follow the usual route and you won’t have any trouble with these classes. Complete actions by tapping on the glowing objects. This will fill up the star meter and eventually, you will earn stars. Prioritize bonus progress actions if you are looking to save some energy.

Keep in mind that after earning each star, you will be given a mini-task. Completing it successfully will award you with ten Knowledge points.

When you are done with the class, hit the Collect button to continue. Once you unlock the lesson, you can head back to the classroom to attend it.

To learn to brew Doxycide, you need to earn five stars within three hours. Since all five stars are required to pass, having full energy prior to starting the lesson is highly recommended.

Like before, focus on bonus progress actions to save up some energy. And as always, complete all of the mini-tasks to maximize the attribute points gain.

Lastly, once you obtain all five stars, you will need to wave your wand over the cauldron to finish the potion. Trace the wand movement in order to complete this action.

Hit the Collect button to claim your rewards and continue. You can collect an additional reward in the Potions section of your Hogwarts Record.

Now that you are done with the lessons, you can continue the story part of the chapter. Proceed to the library to meet your friends.

When you get there, you’ll notice that some of the characters have something to tell you. Tap on their speech bubbles to find out what they have to say.

Once you are done with that, tap on the exclamation mark to join your friends’ conversation. Rowan will ask Bill what it is like to be a Prefect. Bill will mention that Prefects mostly take points away as punishment, to stop students from doing mischief.

After the chat about the Prefect position, you will inform the group that your brother thought the next vault was somewhere in the Library.

Penny will ask if you have any ideas on how to find the cursed vault. You can choose one of three options.

The second option is the preferable one since it will give you ten Courage points as long as you meet the attribute requirement. Then, you’ll get the task to search the library. To complete it, you need to earn five stars within three hours. One star is required to pass.

Since the library is pretty huge, you can slide the screen left and right in order to see all the available actions. There is a bonus progress action tied to Bill. Prioritizing it should save you a bit of energy.

When you are done, you will find a strange note written in a code Jacob used. Upon further examination, Rowan will be able to decode it. According to the note, the vault is most likely somewhere in the restricted section of the library.

Sadly, you can’t go in there without a permission note from a teacher, and since that is not an option, you’ll have to see if Tulip has any ideas on how to access it. There is a waiting period of three hours before you can continue.

Once the waiting time is over, proceed to Jacob’s room to meet with Tulip. On your way there, you’ll encounter Merula. She saw you and your friends in the library and she’ll ask if that’s where you think the next Cursed Vault is. You have two response options.

Each choice will award you with five attribute points, but regardless of the option you pick, Merula will throw some taunts your way. When you are done with her, proceed to your brother’s room.

Tulip will be there, waiting for you. After talking to her for a bit, the two of you will decide to search the room for any other clues that could lead you to the next vault. This task requires you to earn five stars within three hours. One star is needed to pass.

There are bonus progress actions linked to the board, the book, the crate, and the sketch. Prioritize those actions to save energy.

When you are done, you’ll discover a note saying that the book opens a way. You’ll immediately tie it up with the book you found in the previous vault.

As for Merula, there seems to be a solution to that problem as well, according to Tulip. She will advise you to persuade Barnaby Lee to join you on your quest for the vaults. This will be your next task. Hit the GO button and proceed to the Great Hall to meet him.

When you meet Barnaby Lee, he will be still frustrated about the dungbomb you used, complaining that he still stinks after many baths. He will inform you that Tulip promised him a box of Peppermint Toads if he talks with you.

When you ask Barnaby if he still works for Merula, he will correct you and say that he is her partner. You will point out that it is not the case. Barnaby will be confused, forgetting what you said, so you’ll straight-up ask him to work for you and Tulip, instead of Marula.

Barnaby will be curious to know why you want his help. You have two options to respond with.

It is recommended to pick the first option if your Empathy is level seventeen or higher. This will award you with ten attribute points while the second option is only worth five. However, no matter which one you select, you’ll have to duel with Barnaby in order to gain his help.

You will need to wait three hours until Barnaby is ready to duel you. When you are able to continue, proceed to the Training Grounds.

Once you meet Barnaby he will tell you he likes you and that you are nice. But if you beat him in a duel, he will know you’re tough as well and he will be helping you find the vault instead of working for Merula.

Moments later, the duel will start. The task window will display the recommended attribute levels as well as the cost of each attempt. Once you are ready, hit the Start button to begin.

There are several ways to approach this duel. If either your Courage or Empathy is at least three levels higher than the recommended number, you can simply go Aggressive (in case of Empathy) or Sneaky (in case of Courage) and use Depulso or Flipendo. This way, you should be able to win the duel in two turns as long as you don’t get stunned.

If your attribute levels are close to the recommended ones, you can go Aggressive during the first turn and use Incendio. If you get the burn effect, you can go Aggressive or Sneaky during the second turn. However, if you don’t get the burn effect on Incendio, you might end up losing the duel.

Another tactic you can use is to constantly go Aggressive or Sneaky and use Depulso or Flipendo. With some luck, you should be able to win the duel. 

Once you manage to defeat him, Barnaby will suggest celebrating your newfound partnership with a Butterbeer.

To proceed with this task, you’ll have to wait eight hours or spend some gems or time toffees in case you are really eager to go on with the story.

Once you are able to continue, head to the Three Broomsticks to meet Barnaby.

Barnaby will open up to you and reveal that his parents, much like Merula’s parents, were Death Eaters.

After talking for a bit, you’ll receive a task to learn more about Barnaby over a butterbeer. The task window will display the recommended attribute levels and the cost. Once you are ready, hit the Start button to begin.

Drinking Butterbeer is fairly similar to Meal With a Friend mini-game. You’ll get to choose one of three answers, and each of those can increase or decrease the diamond meter by a certain amount.

Your attribute scores will also contribute to this. If your attributes are higher than recommended ones, you’ll fill the diamond meter by two additional points per attribute difference. Similarly, if your attributes are lower than recommended ones, the diamond meter will decrease by two points per attribute difference. Below are the questions and the answers for this task.

• You’re going to think I’m mad… – People say that about me. (Knowledge)
• Why does Merula hate you? – I think she’s jealous. (Courage)
• Our parents were Death Eaters… – Your parents don’t define you. (Courage)
• My dad pushed me to be strong. – I’m sure he’s proud. (Knowledge)
• Just like You-Know-Who… – You’re better than that. (Empathy)
• Do you think I’m mad? – You just had a hard childhood… (Empathy)

When you are done with this task, you will learn that Barnaby actually saw the Dark Lord before.

Not long after that, Chapter 8 of Year 3 will come to an end. Hit the Collect button to claim your rewards. You will earn 250 Coins and 1000 Experience points. This will also add Barnaby to your list of friends.
