The Curse-Breaker’s Gambit Part 2
Introduction
Hello everyone, welcome to Part 2 of our Walkthrough for The Curse-Breaker’s Gambit Adventure of Harry Potter Hogwarts Mystery. During the previous part, Murphy told you he wants to compete in the Walter Aragon Wizard Chess Competition. You learned that only teams of four players are allowed to compete, so you agreed to help him form a team to represent Hogwarts.
Thankfully, Professor McGonagall gave you permission to compete, so you went to find two other wizard chess players to join your team. Luckily, both Badeea and Tulip agreed to join your team, and you now have enough players to enter the tournament.
However, each member of the team is required to have their own set of pieces, and currently, your team is one set short.

Walkthrough
[Disclaimer: This walkthrough will feature the gameplay from the perspective of a Year 7 student. Since the adventure is available for students of Year 5 and above, the star and attribute requirements for certain tasks might be different for you, depending on your current progress of the main story.]
Hopefully, Jae will be able to help you find another set of wizard chess pieces. Head to the kitchens when you are ready to meet with him. Upon arriving, you will notice the speech bubbles above some of the characters. Tap on those if you are curious to see what they have to say. Murphy will admit that he imagined detention to be different. Apparently, he was almost certain it would involve shackles.
Jae will tell him he was wrong about that. You’ll ask if he managed to find a set of chess pieces. The following line will differ, based on whether or not you completed A Special Celebration of Hogwarts Teachers adventure.
Jae will say he was able to find a wizard chess set that was previously owned by a wizard chess master.
You’ll be glad to hear that. You will ask him where the wizard chess set is. Jae’ll tell you there is a slight problem. He’ll point at Pitts. You will turn around and notice him guarding the wizard chess set.
By the looks of it, you’ll need to come up with a distraction.
To do that, you need to earn five stars within three hours. All five stars are needed to pass. Because of that, it is not recommended to start this task with an empty energy bar.
Be sure to slide the screen left and right to see all the available actions. There are bonus actions tied to the sandwiches and the cooking pot. Prioritize those if you want to save energy.
When you are done, you’ll be able to choose one of two ways to distract Pitts. Each option will result in a different scene without having any significant effect on the story.
You’ll then need to cast a spell to cause a distraction. If you go with the first option, you’ll be tasked with casting Incendio. If you pick the second option, you will need to cast Flipendo.
The following scene will be affected by your previous choice.
Luckily, the distraction will work and Pitts will move away from the wizard chess set.
Jae will decide to use the opportunity to escape detention. You’ll thank him for helping you. He will wish you good luck before he leaves. Moments later, you and Murphy will approach the wizard chess set. You’ll ask him if the pieces can be used at the tournament.
The set will impress him. Unfortunately, the set will be missing a Queen. Needless to say, the set cannot be used unless all of the pieces are present. You’ll remember what Jae said earlier.
You will suggest finding the previous owner of the set. Perhaps that way, you might be able to find the missing Queen. Murphy will wonder how you are planning to do that. You’ll decide to take the pieces to Professor McGonagall and see if she can help you figure out who the previous owner is. You will need to wait three hours before you can continue.
Since you will likely be low on energy at this point, it is recommended to wait until this timer runs out. That way, your energy will recharge in the meantime. Proceed to the Transfiguration classroom once the waiting time is over. You will thank Professor McGonagall for agreeing to meet with you.
She’ll ask you about your preparations for the upcoming tournament. You will smile and say that you have enough teammates to enter the competition. She’ll be happy with the team you’ve assembled.
You will tell her about the set you got from Jae and ask if she can help you figure out the identity of its previous owner.
She will agree to inspect the chess set. To complete this task, you will need to earn five stars within one hour. Three stars are needed to pass.
There are reward actions tied to your character and Professor McGonagall. Focus on those actions if you want to save energy.
Professor McGonagall will reveal the identity of the previous owner of the set after examining the pieces. Before she tells you anything else, she’ll ask how the chess set ended up in your possession.
You can choose to tell her the truth or not. Bear in mind that Professor McGonagall will appreciate it if you choose to be honest, so it is recommended to pick the first option here.
Shortly after, you will learn that the wizard chess set you got from Jae once belonged to Brian Gagwilde, a former headmaster of Hogwarts.
Professor McGonagall will tell you that years ago, Brian Gagwilde and Walter Aragon were wizard chess competitors.
You’ll wish there was a way to ask Brian Gagwilde about the missing Queen. According to Tulip, there is a way you can talk to him.
She’ll tell you that Brian Gagwilde’s portrait is hanging over in the Grand Staircase. You will wonder how she knows that. You’ll learn that Brian Gagwilde was a master prankster and the author of Tulip’s favorite book.
You will decide to pay him a visit and ask him about the missing Queen. Head to the Grand Staircase when you are ready to continue. When you arrive, you will be able to interact with some of your classmates and see what they have to say. Brian Gagwilde will be glad to see Tulip. He’ll say he is eager to continue their Dungbomb discussion.
She’ll tell him that the two of you want to talk to him about another one of his favorite interests.
He will be glad to talk about wizard chess. You’ll tell him about the chess set you got from Jae and ask him about the missing Queen.
Luckily, Professor Gagwilde knows where the missing chess piece is. Before revealing the information to you, he’ll want to be sure you’re worthy of wielding his wizard chess set. He’ll ask you to tell him the name of the best book ever written about prank magic. There are three options to choose from. The correct answer is ‘Jiggery Pokery and Hocus Pocus’.
Shortly after, Professor Gagwilde will tell you the story of how he lost his Queen. Hearing Gagwilde’s story is your next task. To complete it, you’ll need to earn five stars within three hours. All five stars are needed to pass, which is why you should avoid starting this task if you are out of energy.
There is a reward action tied to the portrait of Professor Gagwilde. Prioritizing it should save you a bit of energy.
You will learn that Gagwilde gave his Queen to Aberforth Dumbledore after a devastating defeat.
Ever since then, he never played another game of wizard chess. You’ll ask if Aberforth still has his Queen. Apparently, there is only one way to find out.
You’ll decide to find Murphy and go to Hogsmeade with him. Proceed to the Hog’s Head Inn when you are ready to speak with Aberforth. Upon arriving, you will notice the speech bubbles above some of the characters. Tap on those if you are curious to see what they have to say. Unfortunately, you won’t find Aberforth in the inn.
You’ll assume he is coming back at any moment. Murphy will remind you that time is of the essence.
He’ll admit he is starting to feel worried. He will ask if you are feeling the pressure too. There are two options to reply with. This choice won’t significantly impact the story, so feel free to pick either option.
Shortly after, Aberforth will show up.
You’ll tell him about your conversation with Brian Gagwilde’s portrait and say that you are looking for a wizard chess piece.
You will also mention why you need the Queen. This line will differ, based on whether or not you completed A Special Celebration of Hogwarts Teachers adventure.
Murphy will add that Brian Gagwilde said he gave the Queen to Aberforth after losing a game of wizard chess. You’ll also mention the strategy he told you about. Aberforth will tell you he used the Dragon Variation of the Slytherin Defense.
Murphy will say he read about that strategy in some of his books, but never saw it used in practice before. Aberforth will regret using the strategy against his friend.
You’ll tell him you want to bring Brian Gagwilde’s set out of retirement. But in order to do so, you will need the missing Queen. Aberforth will be more than happy to give you the chess piece. According to him, the Queen is still somewhere in the inn, all you have to do is find it.
Searching for the Queen is your next task. To complete it, you will need to earn five stars within three hours. All five stars are needed to pass, so avoid starting this task if your energy bar is empty.
Be sure to slide the screen left and right to see all the available actions. There are two bonus actions tied to your character. Prioritizing those actions should save you some energy.
After searching the place for a while, you will find the missing Queen. Aberforth will gladly give the chess piece to you.
Now your team has everything needed to enter the tournament. Aberforth will warn you that not all sets are created equal. You’ll tell him you are aware of that.
According to him, Gagwilde’s army won’t be an easy one to command. However, if you manage to do that, you should have a solid chance of winning the tournament.
You will thank him for the advice. Shortly after, Murphy and you will leave the Hog’s Head Inn.
This will conclude Part 2 of The Curse-Breaker’s Gambit adventure. Hit the Collect button to claim your rewards. You will receive 3 Gems and 1 chocolate frog.
Now that you’ve found the missing piece, you can gather your team and start practicing for the tournament. Will everything go according to plan? And is Brian Gagwilde’s chess set as difficult to command as Aberforth claimed? Find out in the next part of this adventure!
