The Curse-Breaker’s Gambit Part 3
Introduction
Hello everyone, welcome to Part 3 of our Walkthrough for The Curse-Breaker’s Gambit Adventure of Harry Potter Hogwarts Mystery. Last time, you visited Jae in the kitchens to ask him about the wizard chess set. Luckily, he did manage to get one, but Pitts confiscated it. Thankfully, you were able to distract him and take the wizard chess set.
Unfortunately, it was missing a Queen, so you went to Professor McGonagall to see if she can identify the set’s previous owner. After examining it, she figured out that the set once belonged to Brian Gagwilde, a former Headmaster of Hogwarts. Tulip told you that you can find his portrait at the Grand Staircase, so you went to visit him.
Professor Gagwilde told you he surrendered his Queen to Aberforth Dumbledore after suffering a crushing defeat. You went to the Hog’s Head Inn and asked Aberforth about the missing chess piece. Thankfully, he agreed to give it to you, so now your team has everything needed to enter the tournament.

Walkthrough
[Disclaimer: This walkthrough will feature the gameplay from the perspective of a Year 7 student. Since the adventure is available for students of Year 5 and above, the star and attribute requirements for certain tasks might be different for you, depending on your current progress of the main story.]
Once you start this part, you will be met with a waiting period of five hours. Given that your energy will likely be low at this point, it is recommended to wait until this timer runs out. That way, your energy will recharge in the meantime.
Proceed to the Great Hall once the waiting time is over. Upon arriving, you’ll notice the speech bubbles above some of your classmates. Tap on those if you are curious to see what they have to say. You’ll approach your teammates and tell them the good news.
After returning the missing Queen, the chess set you got from Jae will be complete.
Badeea will be curious to know where you found her. You’ll tell her you got the Queen from Aberforth Dumbledore. You will be eager to finally start practicing with your teammates. Murphy will say there’s a lot of catching up to do. He’ll ask Badeea and Tulip if they read his theory books.
Tulip will say she doesn’t like reading strategy books. Badeea will admit she found the books confusing.
Murphy will remind them that time is of the essence. You’ll suggest playing some wizard chess. Tulip will agree with you. For the first game, Tulip will play against Murphy and you will be facing Badeea. Training for the tournament is your next task. To complete it, you need to earn five stars within eight hours. All five stars are needed to pass.
There are bonus actions tied to Murphy, your character, and both of the chessboards. Prioritize those if you want to save energy.
After playing for a while, you will find that the chess pieces refuse to cooperate and obey orders. Badeea will say that the pawns are angry at the queen for abandoning them. You will remember Aberforth’s words.
In any case, you will need to find a way to get the pieces to work together again. According to Murphy, the pieces aren’t the only ones that aren’t working well together. He’ll say that Tulip doesn’t care much about the chess theory, and Badeea is making rookie mistakes.
Tulip will explain that she joined the team to play wizard chess, not to get bossed around. Murphy won’t be too happy to hear that. In the end, Tulip will decide to quit the team.
You’ll try to convince her to stay, but sadly, she will leave without saying another word. To make things worse, Badeea will also quit since she’ll feel like she’s dragging the team down.
Needless to say, you won’t be too happy with this turn of events. Murphy will blame himself for what happened.
He’ll regret saying the things he said. He will ask if you think he was wrong. There are two options to reply with. This choice won’t significantly impact the story, so feel free to pick the option you prefer.
He’ll apologize to you for making Tulip and Badeea feel bad.
You will tell him there is still time to make things right. If you’ve made a promise to Professor McGonagall, you’ll get an additional line of dialogue here.
In any case, you’ll decide to talk to Tulip and Badeea and convince them to rejoin the team. Head to the courtyard when you are ready to continue. Once you arrive, you will notice the speech bubbles above some of the characters. Tap on those if you want to see what they have to say.
You will go up to Badeea and express to her how sorry Murphy is for making her feel bad. You’re going to advise her to think twice about quitting.
Badeea will appreciate it. However, she will be worried that everything Murphy said was true. She’ll tell you she tried her best to follow his strategy advice. Unfortunately, she found it hard to understand the basics. In other words, she won’t be able to see the game from Murphy’s point of view.
This will give you an interesting idea.
Badeea will be slightly confused by your words. You’ll tell her you found a creative way to help her understand wizard chess. To help Badeea, you need to earn five stars within three hours. All five stars are needed to pass, so avoid starting this task if you are low on energy.
There are two reward actions tied to your character. Focus on those actions if you want to save energy.
In the end, Badeea will realize she doesn’t need to learn wizard chess the way Murphy plays it. Thanks to your help, she found another way to approach the game.
She will feel more confident about playing wizard chess. More importantly, she will be happy to rejoin the team.
You’ll be glad to hear that. However, you’ll still need to find a way to convince Tulip to rejoin the team.
On top of that, you’ll need to figure out how to get the chess pieces to behave. While it won’t be easy, you’ll decide to try your best to fix things. And the first thing you’ll need to do is convince Tulip to rejoin the team. Go to the Artefact Room when you are ready to talk to her. Once you arrive, you’ll find Tulip setting off the dung bombs angrily.
You’ll assume that she is still upset about what happened earlier. Your guess will be correct. You will tell Tulip that you want to have a talk with her.
You’ll say that Murphy is really sorry about what happened during the practice. You will ask Tulip to consider rejoining the team. Sadly, she won’t agree to that.
You’ll calmly ask her to tell you what’s bothering her. Thankfully, she will be willing to talk to you. Talking with Tulip is your next task. To complete it, you need to earn five stars within three hours. All five stars are needed to pass. Because of that, it is not recommended to start this task if you are out of energy.
There are bonus actions tied to Tulip, your character, and the dungbombs. Prioritizing these actions should save you energy.
You’ll learn that the reason why Tulip and Murphy were arguing is that they have vastly different styles.
She’ll tell you she trusts her instincts and her heart when she is playing wizard chess. She will want to know what you think. There are two options to reply with. This choice will affect some of the dialogue lines, but it won’t significantly change the story, so feel free to go with the option you prefer.
You’ll tell Tulip that all styles of play will be welcome on the team. You will then ask her to rejoin and compete in the tournament. She will agree to give it another go.
You’ll be pleased to hear that. You’ll admit that there’s not much time before the tournament starts. However, you’ll have to resolve another issue before the tournament starts.
You’ll decide to visit Brian Gagwilde’s portrait and see if he can help you solve that problem. Head to the Grand Staircase when you are ready to continue. Upon arriving, you’ll notice the speech bubbles above some of the characters. Tap on those if you want to see what they have to say. You’ll approach the portrait of Professor Gagwilde and ask for a moment of his time.
You’ll tell him you need his help, but he will ask if you managed to find the missing Queen. You’ll say that you did and you will also tell him Aberforth regrets what happened all those years ago.
Professor Gagwilde won’t be surprised to hear that.
You’ll ask if he can help you get the pieces to cooperate. He will need to hear the whole story first.
To complete this task, you will need to earn five stars within three hours. All five stars are needed to pass, so avoid starting this task if your energy bar is empty.
There are bonus actions tied to your character and the portrait of Brian Gagwilde. Focus on those actions if you want to save some energy.
Professor Gagwilde will figure out that the pawns are upset about the Queen’s return. You’ll wonder why they would be upset about it. Professor Gagwilde will explain why that is the case.
You’ll come to the realization that it’s important to demonstrate your appreciation for the pawns. Hopefully, they will cooperate if you promise to protect them better by keeping them in clusters. Professor Gagwilde will like your idea.
He will be certain that the pawns will follow your commands as long as you can make them feel important.
You’ll realize there are some similarities between the chess pieces and your teammates.
Professor Gagwilde will have no doubt that you will do well at the tournament. Not long after that, you will leave the Grand Staircase.
This will mark the end of Part 3 of The Curse-Breaker’s Gambit adventure. Hit the Collect button to claim your reward. You will receive 3 Gems.
What will happen at the Walter Aragon Wizard Chess Competition? Is Celine Castillon as good as they say? And will you and your teammates manage to defeat her and win the tournament? Find out in the final part of this adventure!
