Chapter 39 – The Aftermath
Introduction
Hello everyone, welcome to our Walkthrough for Chapter Thirty-Nine of Year Seven of Harry Potter Hogwarts Mystery. Last time, you met with Corey and Merula in the courtyard to talk about your trip to Azkaban. While you were talking, the two of them got into a heated argument, which led to Merula leaving the courtyard. After that, you attended the Divination class, where you learned some things about the upcoming N.E.W.T.s.
You then went to meet with Merula at the lakeshore and talked about the ingredients of Dai Ryusaki’s Dark Scroll. While you were discussing it, Corey arrived and accused Merula of being an actual agent of ‘R’. However, without any evidence, there was little Corey could do about it. Later on, you met Merula in the Artefact Room where you deciphered the riddle that was on the Dark Scroll. You figured out it had something to do with Acromantulas, so you went to the forest to see if you could talk to these creatures. Shortly after you got there, Corey arrived and said there was something you should know. However, before you got to hear it, Merula used the Langlock Jinx and then apparated away with Corey.
Needless to say, you were shocked by the realization that Merula is an actual agent of ‘R’. In any case, you should definitely talk to the Headmaster about it.

But before that, you should take care of the assignments. Proceed to the Ministry Office when you are ready. Moody will thank you for coming.
Apparently, the Ministry needs your help once again. Mad-Eye will ask if you remember the attempted robbery at Gringotts. You’ll nod and say that ‘R’ was after a Chinese Fireball Claw. As it seems, they have decided to find the claw elsewhere. Moody will tell you about some recent activities in Knockturn Alley.
He will ask you to investigate the matter, and you’ll promise to do your best. You will need to complete several tasks to finish the assignment. As always, feel free to do them in any order you prefer.
While doing these, make sure to pick up the task duration that matches their star requirements.
Prioritize the bonus progress actions to save energy.
Try your best to successfully complete all of the mini-tasks to earn some additional attribute points.
Once you complete all of the tasks, hit the Collect button and return to the Ministry Office. Moody will ask if you’ve learned anything about the dragon claw trade in Knockturn Alley.
You’ll sum up everything you found out.
Mad-Eye will be convinced that ‘R’ is behind it. However, the powdered dragon claws that were being sold in Knockturn Alley were most likely dried Doxy droppings. Following that, Mad-Eye will congratulate you on a job well done. You’ll receive a reward for completing the assignment.
Head back to the Ministry Office once you are ready to start the second assignment. Mad-Eye will thank you for coming and say that he needs your help again. You’ll find it odd that he needs your assistance, especially since you finished the school assignments for the Ministry.
Moody will explain what’s going on. Apparently, he’s been tasked with compiling a report on mischief makers.
You will tell him you know a few of those, and he’ll say that he needs to understand their motivations. Also, you will likely need to take part in some mischievous activities during your research.
You’ll receive a list of tasks you need to finish to complete the assignment. Feel free to do them in any order you prefer.
While starting these tasks, be sure to select the duration that matches their star requirements.
Prioritize the bonus progress actions whenever they are available. This should save you some energy.
Also, try to successfully complete the mini-tasks to earn some extra attribute points.
Once you complete all of the tasks, hit the Collect button and return to the Ministry Office. Mad-Eye will be glad to see you, and he’ll ask you about pranksters. You’ll tell him some things about mischief makers.
According to Moody, some of the most dangerous criminals, as well as some of the best Aurors, have those characteristics. You’ll explain to him how to tell the good mischief makers from the bad ones.
You’ll receive a reward for completing the assignment.
Now that the assignments are out of the way, you can continue the story. Proceed to the Headmaster’s office when you are ready. Professor Dumbledore will say that a lot has happened since your last conversation.
You’ll ask if he is referring to Corey being kidnapped. He will nod and say that you are more than likely experiencing some heavy emotions. Before continuing, he will offer you some sherbet lemon. This will slightly confuse you.
He’ll explain that it is a Muggle sweet he likes. He will ask if you want to try one. There are two options to reply with. This choice won’t significantly impact the story, so feel free to pick either option.
Professor Dumbledore will tell you that he wants to talk about the events that led to the kidnapping of Corey. He’ll also mention the fact that Merula is a member of ‘R’. You will ask if he knew about it, and as it seems, the Headmaster was aware that Merula was an agent of ‘R’ for quite a while. He’ll ask you to tell him what happened when Corey was kidnapped.
To do that, you will need to earn five stars within three hours. One star is needed to pass.
There are bonus progress actions tied to Fawkes and Professor Dumbledore. Prioritize those if you want to save energy.
You’ll say that Merula was always trying to dissuade you from looking into the Director. The Headmaster will assume that Corey didn’t agree with her, and you will tell him that Corey was convinced that Merula was hiding something. As it turned out, she was. Professor Dumbledore will ask you about Shiratori’s message.
You’ll quote the words of the White-Robed Wizard.
The Headmaster will think about it for a moment, then thank you for the information you provided. You will ask him about Merula, and he’ll say that he isn’t quite sure what will happen to her. Still, being an agent of ‘R’ is definitely not a good thing.
Professor Dumbledore will tell you that Merula might end up getting expelled from Hogwarts. There are two options for you to respond with. If you like Merula, it is HIGHLY recommended to pick the second option.
In any case, the Headmaster will decide to keep Merula’s involvement with ‘R’ a secret until Corey is safely returned and until that happens, all students will need to stay on school grounds… all but one.
Professor Dumbledore will tell you that Mad-Eye wants to have a word with you. As it seems, he is the one leading the investigation into Corey’s kidnapping. You’ll decide to meet with him immediately.
Go to the Department of Magical Law Enforcement when you are ready to meet with Moody. Upon arriving, you will notice the speech bubbles above some of the characters. Tap on those if you are curious to see what they have to say. Mad-Eye will be glad to see you.
You’ll ask if he is leading the investigation, and he will nod, saying that they are doing their best to find Corey. He’ll then ask you to tell him anything important that Merula said to you, and you’ll recall her words.
Moody will think about it for a bit, and you’ll wonder if Shiratori’s message has some hidden meaning. Mad-Eye will ask you to remind him of his words.
You’ll assume there might be a clue in the message, and Moody will agree with you. The two of you will then get to decipher the message. To do that, you need to earn five stars within three hours. Three stars are needed to pass.
Be sure to slide the screen left and right to see all the available actions. There is a bonus progress action linked to Mad-Eye. Prioritizing it should save you a bit of energy.
Both you and Moody will agree that the message is most likely related to the Forest Vault.
You’ll wonder if there’s something in the vault you overlooked, and according to Mad-Eye, it might be a trap. He’ll tell you to stay at Hogwarts. There are two options to reply with. While both of these will lead to the same outcome, it is somewhat recommended to go with the first one.
Mad-Eye will say that letting you get involved is immensely reckless, in other words, you’ll be giving ‘R’ exactly what they want. Still, you won’t be willing to sit idly while all of your friends are in danger. In the end, Moody will agree to let you assist him with the investigation; however, he will decide to get some reinforcements from the Ministry.
You’ll ask if he is going to investigate the Forest Vault. He’ll nod and say that he’s planning to apprehend Merula and save Corey.
You will need to wait three hours before you can continue. Since you will probably be low on energy at this point, it is recommended to wait and let your energy recharge in the meantime.
Proceed to the Spider’s Lair once the waiting time is over. When you arrive, you’ll be able to interact with some of the characters and see what they have to say. You’ll ask Moody if the Aurors were able to find anyone.
Unfortunately, there won’t be any traces of Corey or Merula near the Forest Vault, and you’ll wonder if there’s something the Aurors missed while searching the place. According to Moody, they were quite thorough in their search, and you’ll ask if they looked inside the Cursed Vault. Unfortunately, the Aurors didn’t find anything in there.
Still, you’ll be convinced there is something they overlooked, so you’ll decide to search the place. To complete this task, you will need to earn five stars within eight hours. All five stars are needed to pass.
Make sure to slide the screen left and right to see all the available actions. There are bonus progress actions tied to your character and a feather lying on the ground. Prioritize those actions if you want to save energy.
The only thing you’ll be able to find is a black feather.
You’ll find it odd that there are no other feathers in the area, and it will remind you of the black feather quills ‘R’ transfigured their messages into. After giving it some thought, you’ll decide to try untransfiguring the feather. Trace the wand movement to cast Reparifarge.
The spell will work, and the feather will turn into a hand mirror.
You’ll be curious to know why ‘R’ would try to hide a hand mirror. According to Moody, it is not an ordinary mirror. He’ll say that it might be a two-way mirror, and he will explain how those mirrors work.
There are two options for you to reply with. This choice won’t significantly impact the story, so feel free to pick the option you prefer.
Moody will say that ‘R’ probably knew that you weren’t going to come to the Forest Vault alone. Suddenly, you will hear Corey’s voice calling for help.
Mad-Eye will tell you to wait.
Despite his warning, you will grab the mirror.
The moment you do that, you’ll be transported elsewhere.
Head to the Whomping Willow when you are ready to continue. You’ll find yourself near the Whomping Willow. You’ll immediately spot Merula waiting for you. As it seems, she’s been there for quite some time. There are two options for you to choose from. You can either attack Merula or calmly approach her. If you like Merula, it is HIGHLY recommended to select the second option.
She will appreciate it if you decide not to attack her. You’ll ask her to tell you where Corey is, and she’ll calmly answer your question without revealing anything.
You’ll demand to know where your friend is, but unfortunately, that will only get Merula annoyed. She’ll say that the two of you need to hurry, and you will demand some answers first.
In the end, she will agree to answer some of your questions. Questioning Merula requires earning five stars within three hours. All five stars are needed to pass, so avoid starting this task if your energy bar is empty.
There is a bonus progress action tied to the Whomping Willow. Focus on it to save a bit of energy.
Merula will explain that you forced ‘R’’s hand by continuously poking around about the Director and their organization. Apparently, they were afraid you might ruin their plans. You’ll ask Merula about those plans, but she will look away for a moment. Sadly, she won’t be able to answer your question.
If you and Merula are dating, you will get some additional lines of dialogue.
Sadly, she won’t be willing to answer any more questions. Merula will take out her wand and cast a spell on the Whomping Willow. The spell will seem to work, and the tree will stop moving. You’ll also notice an opening in the Whomping Willow.
She’ll point her wand at you and nod in the direction of the tree. You’ll try talking to her, but sadly, she won’t be willing to listen.
You will need to wait four hours before you can continue. Given that your energy will likely be low at this point, it is recommended to wait until this timer runs out. That way, your energy will fully recharge in the meantime.
Go to the Whomping Willow once the waiting time is over. Eventually, you will find yourself inside the Shrieking Shack. You will spot Corey lying unconsciously on the ground, and you’ll rush to your friend, but suddenly, you’ll get hit by the Knockback Jinx.
You’ll notice the Director standing on the other side of the room.
She’ll calmly say that you were always so impatient. You will stand up and ask her about the place, and she will tell you that it is called the Shrieking Shack.
The Director will get closer and introduce herself as Verucca Buckthorn. She’ll kindly ask you to call her Verucca. There are two options to reply with. If you don’t want to anger her, it is recommended to pick the first one.
You will ask her to tell you what she’s done to Corey. Verucca will seem slightly annoyed by your question. You’ll tell her that Corey is your friend, and the moment you say that, you’ll notice the worried look on Merula’s face.
Verucca will just look at her without saying anything. Merula will lower her head, unable to look the Director in the eyes. After a moment of awkward silence, you’ll ask Verucca to tell you why she wanted to see you, and she’ll decide to explain everything to you. Talking to the Director requires earning five stars within eight hours. All five stars are needed to pass.
Be sure to slide the screen left and right to see all the available actions. There are bonus progress actions tied to Verucca and your character. Prioritize those if you want to save energy.
You will learn that everything up to this point was part of ‘R’’s plan.
The Director even planned for you to see Merula joining their organization. You’ll also learn that Merula’s job was to ensure that you come willingly to meet ‘R’. Once again, Verucca will sternly glare at Merula. She’ll tell you that Merula is, in fact, her niece.
You’ll be confused upon hearing that. The Director will take off her hat and tell you that her full name is Verucca Buckthorn-Snyde. You’ll notice some similarities between her and Merula.
After taking a few moments to compose yourself, you’ll turn to Merula.
Verucca will comment on that while looking the other way.
You’ll find that very odd. She’ll calmly tell you not to ask too many questions. She will then smile and say that you are destined to lead ‘R’. You’ll tell her that you would never join them, and once again, Verucca will comment on your words while looking the other way.
You’ll demand to know who she is talking to, and suddenly, you will hear a familiar voice.
You’ll notice someone approaching from the shadows.
That someone will be none other than your father, Peregrine. He’ll apologize for being gone so long and say that he is glad to see you again.
This will mark the end of Chapter 39 of Year 7. Hit the Collect button to claim your rewards. You will receive 350 Coins and 2000 Experience Points.
Now, that was a shocking turn of events. How is it possible that your father is the leader of ‘R’? Will you be able to get some answers from him? And what will you do next? Find out in the next chapter of Harry Potter Hogwarts Mystery!
