Chapter 40 – Family Matters

Introduction

Hello everyone, welcome to our Walkthrough for Chapter Forty of Year Seven of Harry Potter Hogwarts Mystery. During the previous chapter, you visited Professor Dumbledore and talked to him about the kidnapping. You also learned that he knew Merula was a member of ‘R’. He informed you that Mad-Eye wants to talk to you, so you went to meet with him.

After telling him what happened, you managed to figure out there might be some clues near the Forest Vault, so you went there. Upon searching the place, you found a strange-looking mirror, which turned out to be a Portkey. It transferred you near the Whomping Willow, where Merula was waiting for you. After talking to her, she took you to the Shrieking Shack, where you met the Director, Verucca Buckthorn, who turned out to be Merula’s aunt.

Thankfully, Corey was fine, and the kidnapping was their way to lure you to them. While talking to Verucca, you also saw a man standing in the shadows. Once he got closer, you realized that he was none other than your father, Peregrine.

Soon enough, you’ll get to talk to him about everything, but before that, you should take care of the lessons. Proceed to the Potions classroom when you are ready. To unlock the Draught of Living Death lesson, you need to earn a total of nine stars from the Potions classes. Select the class duration suitable to your liking and hit Start to begin.

Prioritize the bonus progress actions to save energy.

Also, pay attention to the mini-tasks. Completing each of them will earn you ten Knowledge points.

Head back to the classroom once you acquire enough stars to unlock the lesson. Learning how to brew the Draught of Living Death requires earning five stars within three hours. All five stars are needed to pass, which is why you shouldn’t start this lesson if your energy bar is empty.

During the lesson, Professor Snape will ask you a question about the Draught of Living Death.

Upon earning the fifth star, you’ll need to wave your wand over the cauldron to finish the potion. Trace the wand movement on the screen to complete this task.

When you are done, hit the Collect button to claim your rewards. You’ll earn an additional reward for completing the lesson. You can claim it in the Potions section of your Hogwarts Record.

Go to the History of Magic classroom when you are ready for the second lesson of the chapter. To unlock the Soap Blizzard of 1378 lesson, you need to earn nine stars from the History of Magic classes. Choose the class duration you prefer and hit the Start button to begin.

Like before, focus on the bonus actions to save energy.

Also, try your best to successfully complete the mini-tasks to earn some extra Knowledge points.

Return to the classroom once you obtain enough stars to unlock the lesson. To complete the Soap Blizzard of 1378 lesson, you need to earn five stars within eight hours. All five stars are needed to pass.

During the lesson, you’ll be asked some questions about the Soap Blizzard of 1378.

When you are done, hit the Collect button to claim your rewards. You will earn an additional reward for completing the lesson. You can claim it in the History of Magic section of your Hogwarts Record.

Now that you’re done with the lessons, you can proceed with the story. Head to the Whomping Willow when you are ready to continue. Your father will take you to the lower floor of the Shrieking Shack. He’ll apologize that the place is in a state of mess.

You’ll still find it hard to believe that he is the leader of ‘R’.

Once again, he’ll apologize for not tidying up the place, and you will find his behavior odd, to say the least.

He’ll tell you that you are wrong about ‘R’ being evil. Despite your protest, he’ll say that you will always be his kid. You’ll ask your father if he is aware that you’ve been searching for the leader of ‘R’ for nearly seven years, and you never expected it to be him.

He will ask if you expected the leader of ‘R’ to look like a comic book villain. There are three options to reply with. This choice won’t significantly impact the story, so feel free to go with the option you prefer.

Peregrine will say that you haven’t aged a day. You’ll wonder if he is joking with you, and he will remind you that you used to think he was hilarious. Your emotions will be all over the place, so you won’t be sure what to think of your father.

He will tell you to trust your instinct. There are three options to reply with. This choice won’t have any big impact on the story, so feel free to go with the option you consider the most appropriate for the situation.

Shortly after, you will get to hear your father’s side of the story. To complete this task, you will need to earn five stars within three hours. All five stars are needed to pass. Because of that, it is not recommended to start this task if you are out of energy.

There are bonus progress actions tied to Peregrine and your character. Focus on these actions when they are available to save energy.

Your father will tell you that he wasn’t absent due to some evil reasons. Apparently, he is still looking for various artifacts and treasured items for the wizarding community. Unfortunately, he had to travel a lot because of his work, which is the reason why he and your mother split up while Jacob and you were little. You’ll ask if ‘R’ had anything to do with that.

Peregrine will tell you that he was quite passionate about his work.

He’ll also say that he deeply regrets leaving Jacob and you. His story is definitely something you did not expect to hear, and he will say that his goal is to help others.

He’ll apologize for leaving you and ask for another chance to be in your life. There are three options for you to reply with. This is an IMPORTANT choice. It will affect some of the dialogue lines later on. If you want to give your father another chance, or at least consider it, you should pick the first option. If you don’t want him in your life, you should go with the second choice. Lastly, if you are unsure about it, you should go with the third option.

You’ll ask your father if Jacob knows he’s the leader of ‘R’, and according to him, your brother is unaware of it.

He’ll say that he was proud of you when he learned you saved Jacob. There are two options for you to reply with. If you want to accept his compliment, you should pick the first option. If you want to blame him for Jacob’s disappearance, you should go with the second one.

You will learn that the reason ‘R’ went after the Cursed Vaults was to find Jacob. Still, something about that won’t add up.

Peregrine will tell you that Rakepick went rogue a long time ago. According to him, she was solely responsible for Rowan’s death. He’ll say that you are going to learn the whole story once you join ‘R’.

Still, after everything you went through, you won’t simply be willing to join their ranks. You will ask your father to give you one good reason why you would ever join ‘R’, and he will tell you that they are the good guys. Suddenly, you will hear a loud thud from upstairs.

You’ll wonder what caused that noise, and your father will suggest going upstairs to find out. Go there when you are ready to investigate the noise. Upon arriving, you’ll notice that Corey is awake.

Peregrine will mention the noise you heard from downstairs.

As it seems, Corey fainted after learning that Verucca is Merula’s aunt and your father is the leader of ‘R’. Your friend will have trouble taking everything in.

Your father will politely introduce himself.

Apparently, Corey didn’t expect him to be so friendly. You’ll then get to learn about ‘R’’s goals. To do that, you will need to obtain five stars within three hours. All five stars are needed to pass, so avoid starting this task if you are out of energy.

There are two bonus progress actions tied to your father. Prioritize those if you are looking to save energy.

You’ll learn that ‘R’’s main goal is the pursuit of knowledge and justice, and Corey will point out the obvious fact.

According to Peregrine, it was all Verucca’s doing. She and Merula used Corey as bait since they knew the two of you are friends. Your friend won’t know how to react to that. There are two options for you to reply with. If you like Corey, it is recommended to go with the second option.

Peregrine will say that ‘R’ used to be a secret organization. Unfortunately, they’ve become a popular target recently. He’ll also admit that Verucca is often quite extreme with her methods. The Director will simply smile after hearing that without saying anything.

You’ll ask if Rowan’s death was also another one of those extreme measures. Peregrine will explain that Patricia Rakepick acted on her own when that happened. According to him, ‘R’ had nothing to do with all the horrible things Rakepick has done.

He’ll tell you some things about the members of ‘R’.

You’ll recall your father mentioning the corruption within the Ministry of Magic. He will say that they don’t want anyone to know about it, which is why they blame ‘R’. Also, the Ministry is immensely powerful, and there is not much ‘R’ can do about it.

Peregrine will ask if you believe him. There are three options to reply with. This choice will affect some of the dialogue lines later on. If you want to give your father the benefit of the doubt, you should pick the first option. If you don’t think he’s telling the truth, you should pick the second choice. Lastly, if you want to stay neutral, it is recommended to go with the third option.

Your father will tell you that knowledge is the ultimate power. However, if it falls into the wrong hands, the consequences could be disastrous. This will remind you of something Professor Dumbledore once said. Peregrine will say that the Headmaster of Hogwarts is a very wise man.

You will wonder what barriers he’s talking about and he’ll name a few of those.

He will also say that many would do whatever it takes to protect their own power, and you will ask if he is talking about the Ministry of Magic. According to him, the Ministry would never do what must be done. You’ll be curious to know what that is, and your father will say that ‘R’ wants to create peace within the world. Unfortunately, that won’t be possible if they play by the rules.

He’ll mention that you know some things about breaking the rules. There are two options for you to reply with. You can either admit or deny that you’ve broken the rules before. Since Peregrine already knows you did it, there is no point in denying it, so it is recommended to pick the first option.

You will admit that the situation is quite complicated, and there’s a lot to think about. Your father will remind you that time is of the essence. You’ll ask if he is threatening you, and he will simply say that your Hogwarts studies are nearing their end, and you’ll soon have to decide what to do next. Corey will comment on that.

Moments later, you’ll decide to leave the place, and you will ask Merula if she will be going with you. Instead of answering your question, she will warn you not to tell anyone about her aunt.

Your father will suggest you go back to Hogwarts without Merula. Once you exit the room, Corey will ask what you are going to tell everyone when you get back to school. You’ll say that you need to see someone before going back.

You will need to wait four hours before you can continue. Since you will likely be low on energy at this point, it is recommended to wait and let your energy recharge in the meantime.

Proceed to the lakeshore once the waiting time is over. Jacob will seem confused after learning that your father is the leader of ‘R’.

He won’t be sure if you are serious about it, and you will tell him you are not joking. You’ll then ask if he knew about it, but he’ll say that he had no idea. You can choose whether you want to doubt him or believe him. In this particular case, it is recommended to pick the second option.

Jacob will tell you that the only person he talked to while he was in ‘R’ was Rakepick. You’ll tell him what Peregrine said about Rakepick.

Jacob will wonder how you found out all of that, and you’ll quickly explain what happened. Needless to say, your brother will be quite surprised after learning that the Director is Merula’s aunt. You’ll tell him that according to Peregrine, the members of ‘R’ are good guys, and you will also mention the things he said during your conversation.

Jacob will ask if you believed him. This is where one of your previous choices will take effect.

Jacob will realize why ‘R’ was so preoccupied with the two of you.

Shortly after, the two of you will try to remember everything you know about Peregrine. To complete this task, you will need to earn five stars within eight hours. Three stars are needed to pass.

There are bonus progress actions tied to Jacob and your character. Prioritizing those should save you some energy.

You’ll recall some of the memories from your childhood.

Jacob will say that those are just moments from the past, and he’ll still have trouble believing that a person he used to love is the leader of ‘R’. You will be surprised by his words. He’ll remind you that Peregrine left both of you while you were little. You’ll tell him that your father asked to be a part of your life again, and Jacob will assume that you outright rejected him.

This is where one of your previous choices will take effect.

In any case, you’ll tell your brother that the two of you need to stick together. He’ll say that he needs time to think and will tell you that he simply needs to process everything. He’ll also make it perfectly clear that he doesn’t trust Peregrine. He will advise you to go back to school. Shortly after, you will leave the place and head towards the castle.

Proceed to the courtyard when you are ready to meet your friends. Upon arriving, you will notice the speech bubbles above some of the characters. Tap on those if you are curious to see what they have to say. Penny will be very glad to see you, and she’ll be sure you’ve been on some thrilling adventures, so she’ll ask you to tell her all about them.

You will say that you haven’t been doing anything out of the ordinary. That answer was definitely not the one your friends were hoping to hear. Charlie will say that he hasn’t seen Corey in a while. Apparently, the two of them were supposed to study together, but Corey never showed up. He’ll ask if you know what happened to Corey.

There are three options to reply with. This choice will be referenced later on, but it won’t significantly impact the story, so feel free to go with the option you prefer.

Jae will be quite sure there’s more to the story.

Penny will disagree with him.

Jae will be curious to hear what you think, and Penny will notice that you are absent-minded. Suddenly, you will snap out of your thoughts.

Charlie will ask if you are all right. There are two options to reply with. This choice won’t significantly impact the story, so feel free to go with either option.

Shortly after, Penny will decide to tell you some of the latest rumors. To catch up on gossip, you’ll need to earn five stars within three hours. All five stars are needed to pass. Because of that, it is recommended to avoid starting this task if you are out of energy.

Be sure to slide the screen left and right to see all the available actions. There are bonus progress actions tied to Penny and Cedric. Focus on those if you want to save some energy.

You’ll learn that you will be getting a new Defence Against the Dark Arts professor. Apparently, the previous one ran off recently. According to Penny, Professor Dumbledore called in an emergency replacement. Interestingly enough, it won’t be long until you get to meet the new Defence Against the Dark Arts professor.

You’ll wonder why Bill isn’t teaching the class. Charlie will tell you that his brother is quite busy with his work and will soon be going on a long trip. You’ll ask your friends if any of them knows anything about the new professor, but sadly, none of them will be able to tell you much.

Charlie will look forward to solving this mystery.

Jae will comment on that.

Shortly after, you and your friends will leave the courtyard. You’ll need to wait three hours before you can continue. Given that you’ll probably be low on energy at this point, it is recommended to wait and let your energy recharge in the meantime.

Proceed to the Defence Against the Dark Arts classroom once the waiting time is over. When you arrive, you’ll be able to interact with some of your classmates and see what they have to say. Tonks will be excited to meet the new professor.

You’ll ask if she knows who the mystery professor is, and sadly, she won’t be able to tell you much. She’ll assume it is someone old and grizzled, and Charlie will comment on that.

He’ll wonder if the new professor will turn out to be secretly evil. Tonks will ask for your opinion. There are three options to choose from. This choice will affect some of the dialogue lines, but it won’t significantly impact the story, so feel free to go with the option you prefer.

You’ll then get to ask your other classmates about the new professor. Talking to your classmates requires earning five stars within three hours. All five stars are needed to pass, so avoid starting this task if you are low on energy.

Make sure to slide the screen left and right to see all the available actions. There is a bonus progress action tied to your character. Prioritizing it should save you a bit of energy.

You’ll learn that Tulip heard the other professors discussing your new Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher. She will mention one odd thing about that.

You’ll wonder if they’ve been talking about the new teacher’s name. Not long after that, the new Defence Against the Dark Arts professor will show up.

Tonks will realize she was wrong about her guess. Your previous choice will take effect here.

In an interesting way, the new professor will say that she is planning to teach everyone how to defend themselves.

Shortly after, you will learn that her name is Olivia Green.

Suddenly, you will realize that she was one of Jacob’s classmates. You’ll remember that she and Jacob searched for the Cursed Vaults together. More importantly, Jacob was working for ‘R’ at that time, so there is a high chance she was a member of ‘R’ as well.

This will mark the end of Chapter 40 of Year 7. Hit the Collect button to claim your rewards. You will receive 350 Coins and 2000 Experience Points.
